I think its the coils. 2nd opinion?
Today my 2005 rx8 decided to not play nice and i think that replacing the coils may be the solution. If i could get a second opinion that would be great.
Conditions:
35 degrees
rainy
half a tank of gas
Symptoms:
bogged down like it was losing power pulling through second gear over 6k rpms
flashing CEL that went away after shifting
drove normally at "daily driver" rpms
15 minutes later same problem in second gear.
turned the car off and let it sit for 10 minutes.
turned it back on. drove through a full range of rpms in 1st 2nd and 3rd with no power loss or CEL
normally the car idles a little rough but i always attributed it to engine mounts.
I think its one or more engine coils starting to go. I replaced the plugs 2k miles ago, but i do not know how old the coils are. I bought the car used 4k miles ago.
Any thoughts would be helpful?
Thanks

What is the current mileage?
A flashing CEL is always a misfire, and if the coils, plugs, and/or wires are of unknown age or known age over ~20,000 miles, then yes, replacing the ignition is always the best first step. You can also clean the MAF and the ESS and then reset the ESS profile as well for nearly free just in case it is one of those.

Not off hand, google site:rx8club.com DIY MAF clean or site:rx8club.com DIY ESS clean.
The ESS is just hard to reach, but you wipe it off with a rag. The MAF need the right cleaner, but easy to reach and you just hose it down a few times.
