Hi guys, my name is nick and i am new to this forum and the also new to the idea of owning a rotary project. I have built many race only cars and have had quite a few nice street cars so i am no stranger to turning wrenches ( on a piston engine). I really love the looks of this car and am considering buying one so i have been reading alot about these cars from vendors sites and also mostly this club. Before i take the plunge i have some questions about things i have read during researching this vehicle.

1. witch is the more upgradable series of car and how do i know if it has the higher output motor? Will a 6speed manual always be mated to the higher output engine?

2. i read on this site that these cars are very unreceptive to bolt ons? is this true?

3. i also read that with the superchargers or a turbo that these engine require frequent rebuilding? is this true? if so how often is frequent?

4. if so is 300 - 350whp even attainable and if so how reliable is it? Could it be driven daily?

these were just some basic questions i had before i go out and buy a car. i like the idea of being different and the rotary engine. i dont want to be so different though that it completely limits my options on performance either. these cars are just so awesome looking though, i really like them!!!! also i realize there are other aspects about this car like the awesome handling and braking. i was just wondering more about reliability and basic dyno numbers. thanks for your patients. please dont tell me to search cus if i would have found what i was looking for this post wouldnt be here.

thanks for your time everyone,

nick

Please read the new owner's thread, and probably the newbie's guide to modding before you continue. They contain the answers you are looking for. And no, I wasn't lying when I compiled them.

Hi, welcome.
I can offer a little if the tune guys don't chime in.
I'm a stock guy, take what I say with a grain of salt, cause I'm not 100% sure,but from what I've read;
#1, the 6 spd MT does have more HP.
#2, the Series 1 is more receptive to mods.
#3 IDK.
#4 attainable, but expensive.

I highly recommend the 8 anyway.
I love mine. Solid, well built, drives fantastic, very agile.
Comfortable, & classic style, IMHO.

*Edit* I assumed you have or will read the stickies.
Just my impressions, FWIW, like I said, grain of salt.

Summary: I think you're lying - about everything

ya i read through that stuff and read how the engines dont last long under boost, and i understand the whole heat situation with the rotaries. i also understand how long things last has alot to do with your right foot. i guess i was looking for a mileage guestimate for a boosted rebuild.

to the guy that said get something else... thats how you welcome new comers to your forums??? i am a member of lots of forums and would never welcome someone that way. im just looking for the info i either missed or didnt get from the recommended articles. not to mention i have a race car ( 2 of them) and two bikes. i like to wrench and build i just wanted a lil more info about the car.

so can these be driven daily with the supercharger or turbo charger kits offered from greddy or pettit? as for the money... well time is more my problem than the money? im kinda leaning towards a car setup for entry level time attack?? anyways hope this helps get me alil closer to the info im looking for. thanks guys.

tnt, we actually do steer plenty of people away from the RX-8, though not everyone has the same amount of tact in their word choice. The RX-8 is a high strung sports car with lots of quirks and tons of flaws. It simply isn't for everyone. We would rather steer someone away from an RX-8 than push them blindly into it where an angry owner and a destroyed car is the inevitable result.

It really doesn't sound like an RX-8 is going to be the car you are looking for.

However...

The mileage guesstimate isn't going to happen because there are far far far far too many factors (hardware choice, modification accuracy and skill done to that hardware, engine build quality, build option choices, tune precision, tune safety, fuel quality, sensor quality, ambient conditions, total heat saturation, etc etc...) Many turbo setups don't last more than a mile. Some last 20k+

Additionally, Daily Driver and Time Attack simply do not go together. You should be aware of this if you really own two race cars already. It would be cheaper to buy 2 RX-8s and daily one while racing the other than it would be to buy one and boost it. Seriously.

well i appreciate the info very much. so i must ask if you guys only get 20xxx per engine and only make 300whp... maybe. what interested you in the car so much to keep it. my current two toys a 95 mustang that makes 643 to the rear wheels and 702 hp courtesy of a blown 351 ci small block i wouldnt hesitate to drive across the country, problem is its loud an obnoxious and is stripped down to the interior. my other is a 450 - 500hp 89 supra turbo that im just getting a lil board with and wanted something a lil newer and nicer. how ever both cars are extremely reliable and could run time attack. big problem is the power level is a lil to much for entry level in my opinon. both ride very low, with high dollar done right suspension and nice brakes. so ya i can daily both of these cars. i appreciate the honesty though, its a bummer i love the way these cars look. how reliable are they stock??? to just buy one and drive it as is?

They are very reliable if you treat them right, and they will punch you in the ***** without warning if you don't. They can be horror stories of the worst bat-s**t crazy girlfriend you have ever had, or they can the best lover.

As for why we love them, it's because despite all their flaws, despite being so low on the power game's totem pole, they are a sheer joy to drive. Not everyone is after big power numbers, some are just after that grin from driving a car that fits you like nothing else out there.

People that come here looking for big power inevitably move on and look for something else.
