Let's see..
louder? no. Everything is functionally the same except the ports.
smoother to redline? There is nothing to make it so, it just runs out of breath sooner.
Accelerate differently? Yes, more slowly. The torque curve is samey, it just runs out of breath sooner.
Canyon runs? In an auto?
Fun? Maybe, define fun. There's less to do and less powerband to work with. If you don't feel the need to row your own gears, I'd suggest you at least drive a 6-port auto to compare.
Arrestable speeds? That's a driver question not a car question.
To qualify: the 6-port is a bit underpowered by today's standards. But it's basically fine, the car makes up for it elsewhere. The 4-port is anemic. Definitely at least testdrive the options before committing to that one.

So my guess is that the 4 port was produced as a throwback for previous generations?

I don't know that Mazda ever explained why it made the 4-port. The 8 was supposed to be a more mass market application of the rotary than the RX7, so maybe they thought there would be a market for a cheaper low-power version for getting around town, especially outside north america.

r.i.p.
Hit with a double whammy, ford has a crack in the block and whatever thread that was holding my rear rotor together is gone and its now at 35 psi on one face. Going down to china freight sometime after the new year to get a cherry picker and engine stand.
