I'm new here and used your threads to help with my decision with my purchase and so far I love it! So many great features and it drives like nothing I've ever driven before. I know a lot about the start up and shut down bit I would love some daily maintenance tips on what to check. Apex seals location? I'm a bit of a noob with a rotary engine. So I would love some help
Welcome to the club. Heres a tip i wish i would have knew about sooner because i have an s1 aswell. Mix the gas with 2 stroke. So simple and will save alot of headache. Plus the usual checking fluid levels regularly. Once a rotard always a rotard😜
Apex seals are located inside the engine itself. There are only two ways to determine their health.
1) Tear the engine apart and have a look at them. This is definitive and will give you a lot of good info. Unfortunately, it's crazy expensive as a diagnostic method.
2) Compression test using proper rotary compression testing equipment. A dealer will charge you 1-2 hours of labor for it (~$100-$200) or you can purchase your own rotary compression tester for about $350 and do it as often as you like. If two rotor faces are similar but lower than the third, that's a likely (though not definite) indicator that the apex seal between those two faces is failing.
A lot of people recommend pre-mixing 2-stroke oil in with the gas to supplement the lubrication from the OMP. Start at ~0.5 oz per gallon. Most that pre-mix recommend 2 stroke oils that meet the JASO FD specification. If you decide to pre-mix, buy a few of these and you can measure out 6-8 ounces of oil ahead of time. That way when you need gas, you just dump one in the tank and then fill up.
