With exception of the extra paint it appears to be a stock unit. Even still has the sticker on it. Doubtful it has any serious tune done to it which is actually good news. That would indicate the turbo was removed or never installed. Either way, its definitely not there. Turbo systems aren't very subtle, you would have noticed by now.

Looks stock, except that black wire running around to a strut tower bolt. Where does it go? Could just be extra grounding, but it might lead to a clue.

The good news is it doesn't look like there was a piggyback like an Emanage involved, we don't see any splices in the wiring (check behind the glovebox just in case). The bad news if it was tuned with an AccessPort, which the common/only proper way of tuning these cars until about 2013, and no AccessPort device is included, you can't really read or modify the tune. The worst news would be there is no tune at all, but as suggested above, let's hook up an OBD reader (bluetooth to your phone or otherwise) and work our way up to boost while watching AFR and see how it does.

Extra black wire is just an extra ground - in the ecu box it just goes to a screw on the case. The scanner I have sucks so I ordered a new one - I should be able to get that afr info tomorrow.

The notion that the turbo might have been removed makes me a little sad so sometime this afternoon I am going to jack the car up and see if I can lay eyes on this turbo.

It would make sense it was removed. The turbo kit for this car is rare and probably more expensive than the entire car. More than likely it was removed before trading it in to the dealership for whatever reason.

I think it's still there. Why would you remove the manifold and turbo but leave the rest of the kit there?

Those are the big money components. Maybe he wanted to fool the dealership idk... but it doesn't appear to be attached from the engine bay pics.

Very surprising. I was unaware you could run a turbo with a stock ECU. Thought for sure he'd rip it out before selling. Thats what I would do haha.

Lol - Im glad its there or I would have been in for a very unpleasant conversation with the dealership. I'll have sensor data sometime tomorrow. I really haven't driven it much since I got it - I had the dealership deliver it so I didn't even drive it home. Supposedly the guy from the dealership said he drove it for a week after they got it and the more I read about these cars the more worried I got that he really did drive it for a week - so I've been avoiding driving it until I could confirm things are good to go - to not do any more damage. Sensor data tomorrow - compression testing soon I hope.

Oil filter looks new, and the oil looks good, so at the very least they might have actually done an oil change. Thats about all the trust i have in that particular dealerships abilities.

Reading at idle is deceiving. You want to see how it is across different RPM’s.

What kind of rpm range would be ideal for getting a reading that would be more useful. Can I just give it some throttle with it sitting in the driveway or do I really need to just take it for a drive and record some readings through driving rpm ranges

Really need to take it out and drive it. Ideally, whatever you are using to measure can keep a log. If it does, post it here under different RPM ranges.

I'll do that tomorrow - weathers crap right now. Looks like the app I'm using automatically stores logs so that shouldn't be a problem.

I hope you don't mind my asking - how much did you pay for this car?
It looks to be in very good condition and the Mazdaspeed kit and the GReddy kit are both expensive.

Welcome and happy rotoring!

Of course my logger only logged for a few seconds so my little drive was useless for data. How on earth do people not get speeding tickets in these cars? It doesnt even feel like you're going fast - just gliding on a cloud when the road is smooth.

I think I just uploaded the log file - went for a drive, the file is pretty long though but for that information about tuning someone else might be able to read this wall of text more meaningfully than I am lol. The log doesnt give me a straight afr it gives me the commanded equivalence ratio.
