Hello all

If the gods are smiling upon me I will be the owner of an R3 2010 MT next Friday. Once it’s mine I’ll post photos.

The compression test results were reasonable, but showing the age of the car when referencing the coloured compression chart peppered throughout this site. Hope to get a few years before rebuild time.

I have a question regarding the K&N intake residing in the engine bay. Is the stock intake the same for all Series 2 RX8’s or do I need to order a specific replacement for an R3? I’d prefer to visit the local boneyard to get a used one.

Thanks to all of you for providing such a great resource. Once I start learning the hard way I hope to contribute something useful.

it’s the same for all S2s, it also appears unchanged from the S1, might be easier to find and cost less

I just “lucked into it” although the deal isn’t complete. Which leads me to this - I’m new, but not that new. I’ll let you know once I own it. Can’t have someone swoop in.

Well that’s interesting. I was under the impression aftermarket intakes weren’t an improvement and some went backwards (from the forums). I guess I’ve got the morning reading lined up - I’ll search the RB intake. Thanks again.

The stock intake is really good actually. That's one part I'll never swap. Other issue with aftermarket intakes is they are very low to the ground and if you go through a deep enough puddle you could potentially suck water in the engine which is no bueno. Also, you have the expense of replacing the filter more often. There is nothing to gain but a cool intake noise.

I’m coming to the same conclusion after this morning’s light reading. Not much to gain from the aftermarket intake. Water ingress is an issue here when the season changes from warm rain to cold rain. November brings flooded roads so stock it is. I missed noting the lower mounting location in the threads - thanks for pointing it out.

Manual and auto are slightly different. Auto ones are missing the VFAD system on the airbox. Not a huge deal, but worth noting.

I don't know what the K&N replaces, but the intake accordion tube is also slightly different if needed. One of the 3 holes on the top of the S2 one is blind since that was used as a part of the OMP system on S1. S2 has a completely different OMP system so that one hole is plugged.

Now I just have to wait 6 more sleeps to have a good look at what’s required when the car is in my garage. I’ll post a photo of the intake then. Will have a better idea of what was removed when the K&N was installed. My 1st hunt for parts begins...

Well - no more sleeps to wait. I bought the car in the Victoria area of Vancouver Island BC. That little tidbit is for RedX as you asked. Suppose I had nothing to worry about you “scooping” me. I looked and noted you are based in the land we send all our “wrinklies” in the motor homes for the winter.

I’ve posted 3 photos of the intake. I need a bit of time to hunt down the schematic I remember seeing here of the stock part with part numbers. Just hoping for confirmation of what dig up.

Congrats! That's a nice ride.

Too bad I am not in Victoria now. There are a lot of fun roads there to try the car out, or you could try S2S.

Thanks, I went through your neighborhood on my way to a job in Hay River a few years ago. Just missed the big fires.

Van Isl is great for driving north of Nanaimo. Too many retirees on the south end. S2S lost its charm when they prepped it for the Olympics.

I have to be careful and avoid my wife's eyebrow. Solo trips are best for the twisties.

It looks like all I need is 23-6371 with the clips and a (obviously) new filter. Everything else seems to be there. The K&N looks pretty minimal on what it needed to take away from the car. Or am I missing something?

you need everything there connected to that number by the inter-connected line between the other part id numbers there

if you just post a wtb thread in the Parts For Sale forum down near the bottom of the forum main/front page somebody will have one. There are also some FS part-out threads in there which probably have the intake filter assembly available.




What’s there under your K&N is a heat shield (part ID# 13-370 above), it’s a separate part. Just tell whoever you’re trying to buy it from that you need the entire air intake box.

Good morning and thanks - just placed the WTB for same.

This afternoon I said goodbye to the K&N Typhoon and installed a donor stock air intake box. The car runs quieter and idles better (no hunting rpm). Now I need to find something to remove the yellow paint pen stock number the wrecking yard used on the topside

The idle is about 150 rpm higher now. It just drops a bit at stop lights before smoothing out. Next step is the MAF and ESS cleaning.

Interesting to make changes incrementally and try to notice the differences.

So if I list the K&N for sale on the site does that instantly qualify me for “Bad Guy” status? I think I’ll keep it for scrap metal and parts. Might be able to adapt it as a dryer vent outlet.

I would try WD-40 and if that didnt work then acetone for the yellow paint. Doesnt make you a bad guy to sell the intake. Someone would want it.

Wow! Another use for electrician’s aftershave. The WD40 worked great.

WD-40 has so many uses. It softens paint so not only is it good for that marker, its also good if you have paint transfer from a minor collision happen to your car's paint.

Acetone is probably the last thing I will try for trying to clean stuff off. I'd say one should try alcohol first.

But glad you got it installed. S2 should idle at 850RPM when warmed up FYI.

on that black intake box I doubt it would damage it. But I had a hunch the WD40 would work anyways.

I’m glad I didn’t try my wife & daughter’s nail polish remover - was my first thought. The WD40 polished the lid nicely. There’s no doubt neglect killed the donor car. The inside was caked with oil.

After the past few days of “1st dates” with the car I started wondering about the oil filter.

Previous owner very recently had an oil change done by one of those quicky shops. My hunch was right - they used the wrong filter. Only 600 km and oil looked very black.

(S2 Oil Filter By Pass rating is 20.3—26.1 PSI
S1 Oil Filter By Pass rating is 11.4—17.1 PSI
