New owner, New member.
Great forum. I have been searching and reading since I bought the 4 days ago and found so much great info.
I do have some questions that I have found conflicting information on the internet, this forum, and the dealer.
I have a 2009 and I have one flip key. The flip key is FCC ID KPU41788 VISTEON NO. 41525
My questions are:
1. Am I correct in thinking that there are two things that need to be programmed - the key transponder and the wireless entry transmitter?
2. Am I correct in thinking since I only have one key, I must go to dealer or auto locksmith to code the key transponder?
3. Am I correct in thinking I CAN program the wireless entry transmitter myself with only one working key?
The dealer quoted me at $75 for flip key blank and $160 for keyless entry section, or $65 for a regular straight transponder blank key,
Both options would need to be programmed at a cost of $145.
I found these instructions for programming wireless entry
and these for programming transponder.
2009 Mazda RX-8 Key Programming
You must have 2 original keys that start your engine to perform this procedure. If you only have one working key or none at all it must be programmed by a dealer or locksmith! Your New third (unprogrammed) key must also be cut prior to performing this procedure.
Please Note: If one of your keys is a cloned key from a hardware store this procedure will NOT work. This procedure requires original programmed keys.
1. Insert an existing (working) key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder ON (just shy of starting the car Without cranking the engine) and back to OFF. Ignition should stay in ON position for approximately 3 seconds until security extinguishes.
3. Turn to OFF positing and remove the existing key
4. WITHIN TEN SECONDS, insert a second working key and turn to ON and then back to OFF. Ignition must be on for at least 3 seconds until security light extinguishes.
5. Turn to OFF positing and remove the existing key.
6. Insert the New (unprogrammed) key before twenty seconds have elapsed and turn to ON. Leave it in the ON position for at least 3 seconds and turn back to OFF.
7. The security light will light up for THREE seconds to indicate the new key has been successfully programmed.
For those who do not have 2 original keys: These keys can NOT be cloned at hardware stores like Ace, Lowes, Walmart, & Home Depot. They must be programmed by an automotive locksmith or dealership.
However I also found these
Use these instructions to program a smart key.
This vehicle is not on board programmable and requires a qualified professional to program smart key remote fobs.
1. Locate an automotive locksmith in your area using the phone number or website below.
2. If your vehicle is still mobile, it may save you money by driving to the locksmith instead of having them come to you.
3. The locksmith will then hook up specialized computer equipment to your vehicle in order to program the smart key remote fob.
Just trying to figure out a way to get a key for my wife that doesn't end up costing almost 1/10th of the cost of the vehicle.
If I can program the keyless entry section myself, it seems the safest and cheapest way is to get a flip key section blank programmed by locksmith or dealer, and then order the wireless entry section off the internet and program it myself. Am I wrong?
Whenever i have such type of questions in mind regarding key fobs, I consider a locksmith. They answer all of my queries and provide the best solution to the problem.
Went to Maryland Locksmith in Glen Burnie, Md and found a blank they cut and programmed to car and programmed the entry features.
I had already ordered blanks in the mail, when they arrived I programmed both with entry features myself with above instructions.
Planning on going back and getting these cut and attempting to add to car myself. Will see what happens.
