Mechanic needed!!

My rx-8 recently gave up on me in the way that when I try to start it all it does is make a whirring sound like power is getting to the starter but it won't turn over. I need help identifying this problem and finding a mechanic in Fayetteville nc. I'd like to try and stay away from the Mazda dealership if possible but this car is my main mode of transportation.

If you are willing, we here on the forum can help you diagnose it for free, and if you have even a tiny sliver of mechanical aptitude, then you can probably fix it with our advice. Of if you don't, then you will have a much clearer picture to tell a mechanic that you do bring the car to.

Otherwise, most general mechanics will be able to solve the problem, but they may not be able to find the problem. Dealers are slightly more likely to find the problem, but you will pay much more for it. Your best bet is still going to be with us on the forum first to properly identify the problem before someone just throws your money at it randomly.

If what you hear is the whirring of an electric motor spinning under load, then the starter isn't engaging.

If the battery voltage is OK while you're doing this, it's either a bad drive or a bad solenoid. I don't know the details of the RX-8's starter, so I don't know if there are any replaceable parts or if it's just new starter time. But someone here should.

Most good mechanics should be able to diagnose this, usually with a quick listen. IMHO, the problem RI alludes to is finding a good one who won't blow it into something bigger. Dealer will usually kill you on price by using a new Mazda starter at list price.
