Is this motor salvageable?
So I am planning on doing a REW swap on my 04’ RX8 manual. There is a guy selling one for a pretty decent price, but i am worried about the rotors being covered and soot and the scoring on the plate, the rest looks decent. Is this a motor i would be able to resurface or should I keep looking? If so whats a good price for it? Looks like it comes with the E Shaft, intake manifold, coils, plugs, pan, etc.

Looks like it sat with water in the combustion chamber... you can see pitting where the corner seal and side seals were sitting. Any grooves and pitting will lower the compression.
Its very difficult to tell on pictures comdition of plates and housings.
What is the red paint?? On the housing?
Best thing to do is get whoever is going to build the engine have a look at the parts

There's also black paint overspray on the housing mating surface. If they didn't care enough to mask while painting, or at least clean it up after, what else did they neglect to do in the previous rebuild? Not filling me with confidence, but depends on how much they want/ how much risk you're willing to take that it doesn't live long. You can rebuild anything to run once, its longevity that gets compromised when corners are cut.

77 cylinders, 4 rotors...
yeah it didnt look like the most amazing motor ever but hes not asking a ton, 1600. So while obviously this motor is pretty junk but ive had a hard time getting a hold of a 13b for a decent price point. I might just get a reman at this rate, but id hate to buy a new motor to immediately tear it apart and try to dowel, port, etc. it then reassemble it myself. I want a motor i can learn on, make mistakes on, but i also dont want to have a motor thats going to **** out on me constantly.

He doesnt have any engines available, and its a long wait list to get one done. Plus I want to learn how to rebuild rotaries, so other than the machining I want to try to do this all myself.
