My Christmas Present..

Hi Everyone,
Hope you all have had a good Christmas Holiday and missed the bad weather.
This picture of me with our "new" '10 R3 was taken on Dec 24th, in Durham, the village 2hrs N of Toronto... 10C / 50F amazing, below freezing today but still no snow.. (if I have loaded it)
Car not plated yet, sitting on Pilot Super Sports, Xi3 winters ready to go on before driving..
Have seen pictures of bad rust on 8s so thinking about that; I usually get my winter driven vehicles oiled, but requires drilling access holes and it's messy.. but guessing Mazda skimped on the Zinc coated steel... decisions, decisions...
I hate rusty cars..
Will post another pic when the winters are on it.
Regards to All
Trevor

Not sure about the series 2 cars but my series 1 has lived through 10 years worth of North East winters, and is parked outside all the time. I have very minimal rusting - just be sure to wash it off regularly if the roads are going to be salted to hell. Welcome to the club!

Nice catch, welcome to the club!

Parking outside is key if you're going to drive it in the salt.
All things considered, if drilling holes is heart-breaking, wait till you see the first rust

there are plenty of ways to get into the panels without drilling. if you can access under the R3 skirts carefully and not break the clips there are lots of holes in those rockers. i strongly recommend spraying a wax protectant in there it's like $12.99, or take it and pay crown the $130 for the whole car and not break a sweat; good peace of mind. I have small oil access holes in mine... nobody cares. worth it.

enjoy the new ride.... greetings from Barrie.

Winters and plates now on

Hi Everyone,
Here is a pic of my "new" R3 sitting on those unused S1 18s and 235x35 Michelin Xi3s; they were a lucky find on kijiji
Your comments were appreciated, a closer look shows that it has been "oiled" before and will be again next week. The garage is detached and unheated so it should not suffer too much with limited use.
This should be a fun drive when the roads have been plowed..
Could anyone tell me the name / location of Mazda dealer #35196?? I want to follow up with them on some service work by a previous owner...
Regards to all

Haha just kidding just kidding. Nice looking car man. Take good care of her. I'm not sure off any good dealers in that area, but I'm sure someone on here can help you out. Congrats and stick around the club

Thats one heck of a christmas present. Welcome / Congrats!
Im not that big a fan of the oiling stuff... but that being said I dont winter drive my 8.
If you decide not to go with the coating, make sure you definitely get the car washed regularly... not sure how they are in Durham with road salt but in my area around toronto, they just flood the roads with it.

That being said, the car looks great. Hoping it stays that way.
Cheers!

Hi again,
It is done, I ended up going with RustCheck, a close look found some small rubber plugs in the ends on the top side of the sills, and plugs in the doors, so it had been done before. I do not like the associated mess but after doing it for many years there is little doubt that it works.
My daughter bought a new MPV around 2004, had the dealer rustproofing and annual inspections and it fell apart, they didn't listen..
It is good to hear about some higher mileage 8s out there, doubt that mine will ever be one of them... but it will be well taken care of, pre-mix, oil changes and watch out for any signs of ignition failure... I'm thinking that ignition problems will likely start to show up at high revs under load, WOT?
The Turbo X exhaust looks good, but has a bad drone at my usual cruising speed and is generally pretty loud, will be trying a "spiral turbo specialties" insert in the pipe to quieten it. Looks like a Dynatech Auger, but made from 304SS and real welds..
Regards
Trevor T
