My thoughts on the rx8
So I have now had my rx8 for a month and absolutely love it.
My previous vehicle was a 1988 jeep Wrangler which I also absolutely loved. My Wrangler was the vehicle my father gave me when I got my license and I had countless hours of work into it. I owned it for three years and my dad owned it for two before me but, continuing engine trouble and absolutely terrible gas mileage caused me to fix it one last time and sell it.
I know all of you think the '8 is bad on gas but, for anyone thinking it is bad try driving a jeep for a few weeks, I averaged between 11 and 13 mpg, my '8 by comparison averages 18 mpg with numbers as high as 22 mpg on highway only journeys. The steering is incredible, yes I know I'm biased having driven a lifted jeep for years, I have driven my father's '95 vw gti and an '02 Ford escape also and this car has the best steering I have ever felt zero play and extremely precise feeling; on my jeep you could radially turn the wheel 45° without it changing direction. It has a lot of power, yes that power is in the high rpms but, you can rev all the way to 9k so that's not a problem. Anytime the car gets past 6k rpm it makes one of the best engine notes I have ever heard. The overall handling is excellent it corners so smoothly and feels so incredibly stable. All the driving aids transaction control, stability control, anti-lock brakes, all things I've never had before on my jeep that are absolutely great to have. Brakes are absolutely amazing you almost don't have to touch the pedal to stop at normal speeds.
This car is absolutely great and I would always recommend this car to anyone who is willing to do the upkeep if they aren't they aren't going to have a great experience.
I have told everyone that has asked me about my car this "my jeep was fun on the odd occasion I got off road or found a Puddle to play in, this is fun all the time"

Ditto. I've had mine for almost 2 months and feel the same way. I feel that I've been semi-neglecting many other things over the past month because I spend so much time working on the RX8 - call it infactuation.

Retired and bored
Congrats and welcome. I have had mine since new in 05 where I traded an 01 svt mustang cobra to get it. I have never regreted it since. Sure my cobra had twice the HP but always felt so heavy and clumsy worst on gas too then my 8. I don't mind all it's little qurks and the maintainace that come with my 8 it just gives me stuff to do lol.

I personally love tinkering and working on things I never let any shops do work on my vehicles so I don't mind the maintenance. I like anything different and you can't get much more different than a rotory. My jeep was anything but, maintenance free so this isn't anything new to me anyway. My jeep also hated running cold so I was even used to letting it warm up before leaving.
