Need advice 2005 rx8 bad engine

Ok well I need an engine.
So this one running for under 1k and with all the attached components except the alt and ac compressor is a pretty good deal, right?

Just needing to know what the best approach is, and what you all would do in this situation.

If it's a low comp motor I wouldn't pay more than 350. If it's new your talking 3500. So motor health is important to find out your price point. And compression scores are the main factor.

If it's a good used motor. I.e. somewhere in mid 7's at least then yea it's worth 1k.

But correct me if I'm wrong, with no rotary specific compression tool, I'm unable to get the exact #?

That's correct, you get 3 readings per rotor and the RPM when the readings were taken, example:
Rotor 1
8.2,
8.1,
8.2
RPM 245

Rotor 2
8.3,
8.4,
8.4
RPM 252
