Before you do anything, get a rotary-specific compression test done.

There are other reasons the car could be running rough and you should never trust the word of the guy who sold you the car.

Get a compression test done at any Mazda dealer and post the results here. We'll help you figure out what to do from there.

This is a thread with a list of reputable rebuilders.
If you find someone else please post the info there and I will add them.
Thanks.

Also looking for a rebuild

Hey, a few months ago I picked up an 05 RX-8 and I’m looking for a place to get a rebuild. I live in the Raleigh, NC area and haven’t been able to find many places. I found one in Charlotte(Kannapolis), NC. I think it’s MotorSportRacing but they no longer rebuild RX-8s. I heard of a place in Ronoake but couldn’t find anything. Does anyone know of any places?

If it's a 6MT, just get an engine from Mazda.

Runs but has some issues still

well we found out the main reason for it running rough was the catalytic converter was clogged up, cleaned it up and reinstalled it, seems to be running better, but were still having some compression issues, just bought new coil packs and spark plugs, as well as ran seafoam through the engine, a guy we know said it may be because of carbon build up on the apex seals but not sure, also unfortunately didnt end up getting the compression test done

Seafoaming is mostly delaying the inevitable.

If your cat's clogged then there could already been some damage to the engine from the back pressure.

Also the reason your cat is clogged is because of poor ignition coils, so you'll want to re-examine your cat after the replaced those.

Also.. cleaning a cat is not a thing. Whatever you did was not cleaning, so now I'm wondering what was done..

I am assuming he whacked the element out of it.

Emphasis on assuming.

Looks like they got new ignition components, though.

Not in any reasonable quantities. You'd have to use a metric crapton of premix to impact the cat the same way bad ignition does.

Without compression numbers, this thread is useless. We can blab back and forth for 10 pages and still won’t know what’s wrong with the car. Lol.
