The other thing though is have you confirmed it's dead? Plenty of reasons for an rx8 to not run, not all of them mean it's dead. If the last problem was white smoke, have you had a look at the plugs to see if there's coolant on them? Have a read at rx8help.com to get caught up.
Also.. thr 4-port automatics have always been the least fun, most expensive to replace variants of rx8. You could probably buy a non-running 6-port manual cheap and swap a new engine into that, or an entire running manual for not much more than the price of a 4-port from Mazda.
You could also call pro rebuilders : Pettit, Pineapple Racing, Rotary Resurrection for a quote. Surely in California there are reputable ones as well.

You can definitely buy a 6-port engine from Mazda. I don't know if they still sell the 4-port automatics you have, but it's worth a shot.

Don't waste money on rebuilding it unless you absolutely LOVE your 8.
A running 6 speed with a healthy engine would be a better choice imo.

Do you have any good tips on places where I can find parts? Thanks again!

The previous owner had a mechanic look at the car and they said coolant was leaking into the engine (possibly). I am inclined to believe them.
Quite honestly I was mostly trying to figure out how much it would cost me to do an engine rebuild and where I can find an engine rebuild gasket kit. I am also looking at Ebay JDM engines. Do you have any experience with that?
Thank you for the resources!

Rebuilding a rotary is not the same as rebuilding a piston engine.

Pierre,
Good that you're realistic...yeah white smoke and a friend telling you that a mechanic has diagnosed a coolant seal leak are pretty good indicators that you need a new engine / rebuild. Yes, check compression and plugs for coolant, but likely accurate.
To add to the good information you've already been given. Rebuilding the engine yourself you'll learn a TON. Just be sure you have the space, time, $$$, and patience ...not just for the rebuild, but should anything go wrong to do it again. The alternative is to swap in a reman. I've done both. Glad I rebuilt ...for the learning, but moving forward if/when necessary will install remans ...for the ease. If your primary goal is to learn ...rebuild. If it is to get her back on the road...reman.
Sounds like you've already contacted some reputable establishments regarding rebuild and / or parts. Realize you are asking an "unknowable question": "what parts do I need?" at this point in the process. The process is dismantle..., assess..., then determine precisely what is needed. No reputable shop can provide you a direct answer to this question pre-dismantling and assessing your engine. If one does...do not walk, run away.
So, either you will need to pull and dismantle your engine to assess damage, or after checking references, etc. you'll need to select a shop to do so ...BEFORE you will know precisely what is needed to successfully complete a rebuild ...that will reliably run ...for any length of time.
all the best.

This thread is about a really bad rebuilding experience by one of our members.
If you scroll down to post #79, Kevin from Rotary Resurrection does an excellent job of explaining the rebuilding process and what kind of expectations an owner should have given his/her situation and budget.
It's one of the reasons I decided to buy a new engine.
