CA New member from California

Bought an RX-8 for 1500.00. Have no experience with rotary engines but I plan on doing all the work myself.

It's going to be a small project. Car Starts but dies after 3 minutes. I bought the car expecting to put in a new engine, so if i can't fix it i'm throwing a new engine in there, or might just rebuild it depending how deep my pockets are.

95 Eclipse GST Sold
92 3000gt VR4 Sold
04 zx6r 636 Sold
95 Integra GSR Sold
99 Prelude Sold
02 BMW 325ci Crash
06 Yamaha R6 Sold
04 Mazda RX8 ===

Future Plans---Getting the car to run. I will lower it but other then that it will be stock.

Welcome! Car looks nice.

Do any CEL codes come up during those three minutes? Hopefully the problem will be something other than mechanical inside the engine. Get a compression test at a dealer or rotory specialist before diving into the engine.

Have fun with it, and come back and let us know how you're doing.

The CEL light was on but the cars battery was removed previously so the code has been cleared. Only way to check it now is for me to get it working for longer then 1 minute and take it for a drive until the code pops back up. Thanks Ken, ill get the compression test done when i starts running again.

you just need the engine to turn in order for a compression test to be done.
where is CA are you? (SoCal?)
does it idle rough when it does start?
does the car still have a catalytic converter installed?

I live in South Sacramento, thanks man i didnt know that. Just a heads up everyone i don't know anything about cars at all besides just basic maintenance(oil tire battery replacement). Google is my best friend right now.

UPDATE:
Car doesn't start at all now. Only started once and died 2 minutes later. I need a new ignition now because its stuck on ACC. So get this, when i put the car on the lift, there was a major oil leak coming from the seals, the exhaust/cat had oil in it haha(?? don't know how) and a ALOT of parts were disconnected from the suspension. Luckily they weren't missing. Some of the wires are disconnected and missing(cut). The The whole exhaust system came right off because its missing a lot of screws and bolts

I'm taking out the engine today and making sure I have all the wires and connectors before i do anything else. After that comes a new Engine(Fresh Start). Im going to keep the old engine and try to understand it and hopefully rebuild it in the future. It's crazy how some people just abuse their car and then get upset when the car doesn't work any more.

Ill take some pictures today and keep you guys posted on the project
