update on the non runner.

as you know from an earlier post i was given and rx8 for nothing by my aunt.

basically she went to drive to work one morning and it would crank but not fire up. any way she had it recoverd by local garage one with a very good reputation for fixing cars and they told her that upon checking the car over the said the car had zero compression and the apex seals were trashed. and they offerd her £50 gbp for the car as scrap. however she offerd it to me for free to fix or sell. so i collected the car trawled through this forum and got some gread advice of you guys which has helped me alot,

today i set upon going through the basics of just deflooding the engine (as i suspected that a car cannot just loose compression over night) to my amazment upon removing the spark plugs i could immediatly see they had not even been removed from the car in quite a while (despite the so called garage owner telling me he had done a full compression test !!!) the spark plugs were probley original ngk ones 2 were gunked up with oil and 2 had alot of carbon deposited on them. so just out of chance i thought i would give them a quick clean up and with a wire brush and a needle and see if it would give it a better spark

to my supprise again the old girl fired up on the first turn of the key!!.

it revved freely and despite alot of smoke at first it ran very well i let it warm up then held it at 6k rpm for a minute.

( i was very happy at this point couldent believe my luck)

i have noticed however as the revs drop the car pops slightly (has cat and standard exhaust is this normal)

and also the idle is quite rough i suspect this is due to the knackerd spark plugs.

futhermore i took the car up the road first drive of an rx8 and it felt very gutless nothing like a 190 bhp. car.

anyone car to shed any light should i replace the plugs and go from there ?

Thanks

Merged with your existing thread, no need to start a new one since you are dealing with the same problem.

And we gave lots of advice above, how much of it have you followed yet?

You still have the same list. Replace coils, replace leads, replace plugs. Clean MAF, clean ESS, reset NVRAM. See where you are at then.

I'd lay money that the ignition is completely shot, given the state of the plugs and how much of a difference cleaning them made. If a cat is still installed, that is probably clogging/failed, so watch out for that and don't push the engine until it's gutted or replaced. A clogged cat can damage the engine.

If you still have problems after all that, take it for a compression test. I wouldn't think compression is a problem offhand, just because it WAS able to start with just cleaning the plugs. It may not be great, but it probably isn't failing.

For reference, stock ignition that is 30,000 miles old but still "functioning" was proven to cause a 28whp loss on the dyno. New owners are often astounded by how radically improved the engine is when fresh ignition is installed. So yes, it will be way down on power at the moment.

RIWWP is right for sure - I bought my '07 RX8 with 34,000 miles on it and it wasn't slow, but not fast either. So I ordered new plugs, wires, and ignition coils, and after I swapped those out the idle got much smoother and I felt noticeably more torque and get-up. Seems like there's a very good chance that this is your exact problem...
