The only reason to change your oil based on a "timespan" is if you make short trips as condensation starts to build up in the oil from not being fully warmed up during a drive. Other than that, there is absolutely positively no reason to change the oil unless you have run its mileage based life cycle (i.e. 3000 miles).
Oil doesn't magically degrade just because it is 3 months old.

Changing oil weights [solved]
I just recently bought my 2004 rx8 and since i don't have much knowledge as far as maintenance on the car i have decided to do a simple oil change however, i know that a large portion of the oil stays in the oil cooler lines and the coolers themselves. Due to the weather here in the central valley in California which is generally quite hot i want to switch to 5w-30 oil my question is since i would only be changing a portion of the oil is it okay to do so? If so my oil will be an odd mix of 5w-20 and 5w-30. Also is it even worth it to make the switch or should i just keep the current 5w-20 oil?

So are you just guessing it's 5w20 because that's what the owner's manual says?
Regardless, changing oil and other fluids when you buy a nice used car is a good idea, and the answers from the other guys are correct. Just put in what you want, it will be compatable with whatever's in there now.
Don't read too many of the oil threads here lest you want your head to really start hurting.![Smilie](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Congrats on the ride, and welcome.

Yet another oil thread
Here is what is going on. Taking my car for an oil change at the Mazda dealership and they want to change it to a factory made 0w40 synthetic oil. Is it okay to run it. I've seen all the oil threads but I'm curious if someone uses this oil.

Yes, that oil is fine.
All oils are fine![Smilie](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
The people that get all wound up over one oil or another are missing the the point entirely, which is that clean oil is far more important than oil type, and residue from burning is a bigger problem with the gasoline than the oil, but if it's really concerning, install a SOHN and stop burning dirty 4-stroke completely.

Using mazda 5w 20
Hi
I am currently using the mazda oil 5w 20 specific for rotary engines. I am looking to do an oil change and I am wondering should I stick with the mazda oil or go for something better?
I am from the UK. I notice the engine feels smoother on colder days, maybe the mazda oil is too thin?
Thanks
Antony

Are there any real benefits for using an expensive oil or higher level oil (such as hydrocracked in minerals, or PAO/ester in synthetics) in normal day to day driving?

We get a lot of calls and e-mails from people asking for recommendations on types of oil. As you probably already know, we don’t give out any recommendations, since we find that any oil tends to do justfine in a well-running engine.
...
If your heart is set on using Mobil 1 until you’re dead and gone, there’s nothing wrong with that. If Castrol happens to be on sale when you’re buying oil, there’s nothing wrong with switching to that one. There’s nothing wrong with using Valvoline or Royal Purple or Napa or AutoZone oil either. The same goes for conventional versus semi-synthetic versus synthetic oils. Your engine is going to be fine as long as there’s some lubrication getting on all those moving parts, so stop beating yourself up about what oil type to use. We hereby grant you oil freedom for the rest of your days!

40th anniversary Edition
You would be kinder to your engine changing oil very 3000 miles, and if you are only driving the car 4000 mile a years, I would change that oil at least twice a year. I am not giving you a hard time. I have driven well over a million rotary miles since 1973, street and track and I have never had even a single rotary engine failure in any of my seven rotary Mazdas. Part of that is due to my being overly religious about oil changes every 3000 miles, or sooner if the car has been tracked . Just my advice.

Have you read the new owner's thread yet? Best way to emerge from being green.

Dino is conventional oil, as opposed to synthetic oil. Lots of disagreement on which is preferred. Disagreement is enhanced by the rotary's feature of needing oil injected. Sohn is an adapter that lets the oil metering pump draw from a reservoir of 2-stroke oil rather than the sump. Premix is the practice of adding 2-stroke oil to the gas tank, to supplement what gets pumped in.
Much of the charm of owning a rotary is learning the ins and outs of oil, being careful to not get into a religious war over any of it.![Smilie](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)

What I use...
Idemitsu Racing Engine Oil
Idemitsu Racing Premix
I dont get on the track too often. I like to drive my RX8 rough and fast, but I also keep my MPG in check. I do suggest Premix from idemitsu if you atleast RPM cap it on a daily basis (getting on the highway) it really gives it a better more... Lubbbed feel =D My openion
