New Member... Searching for my first RX-8
Hey everyone, as the title suggests, I am looking for my first RX-8 to use a track car. I am planning to move on from my current track car for something I can treat as more of a project. One thing I am having a hard time nailing down is if a slicktop is worth prioritizing in my search or if there are reputable roof skins that can be welded in. I imagine I'm not finding roof skins for sale because it is a pretty small market for that sort of thing. I don't mind one off fabrication, just wanted to check if anyone had insight into this before I settle on a sunroof model. Is it difficult to find an OEM slicktop? I see plenty of RX-8's for sale, but almost all of them have a sunroof or an unrealistic asking price. Thanks!

R3's, the sportiest trim 2009-2011 don't have sunroofs and I would say the most desirable overall. If it's for track, a manual Sport trim 2004-2008 should do you fine and not have a sunroof. If there aren't any near you for now, give it a bit of time.
I can't comment on feasibility of swapping roofs, can't say I've heard of it done. Is this a class requirement or driver height issue or?

And thanks for the tip regarding 2004-2008 sport trim models. I mostly need a slicktop for helmet clearance.

R3's have improved Bilstein suspension, Recaros and bespoke aero bits. Doesn't matter if you're stripping out the car for track duty, but if you're staying roughly stock for class reasons it's better than a regular 8.
Are you stripping it out? How tall are you? I'm 6'1 and just about max supportable height with helmet, stock seats and a sunroof. There are tricks that can gain you another inch or so by modifying the seat.

And thanks for the tips regarding the trim differences. I think I will pass on a R3 or similar special edition since I plan to change/swap out most of the performance oriented parts.
