Long time VW owner, lately been looking for something I can ride during the 2 good seasons around here. I'm currently looking to buy an RX-8. Been doing some research and happened to come across this site. Though I am having a small bit of trouble to find a Rotary specialist mechanic in northern WI. So if anyone knows one please tell me. I am open to any tips or extra's not posted around here to help with owning the 8. So I have tried searching across the net and here, the one thing I see across the board is the rev high before shutting off the motor and others speaking its not needed. Any advice on this is welcomed. Thanks.

yes, all agree it's wise to generally rev the engine high. Higher than one would rev an ordinary engine. New RX-8s came with a Mazda pamphlet of tips and one of them said, in big letters, BUZZ IT! They said that because unsuspecting people used to an ordinary engine don't like to rev motors very high. Nor do they need to to get lots of power. (In fact, most of us were brought up being told that revving an engine real high is bad, as it makes the engine work harder and parts will wear out faster.) But not so with the Renesis, which was designed to be revved high and often. It's generally believed that perhaps the biggest reason some Renesis engines gradually lose compression and ultimately fail a compression test is because the engines were babied, rarely revved much over 3-4K. I believe that's true. So many like to rev their 8s to redline at least once per ride. Sure, you can cruise on a perfectly flat superhighway at 60mph at 3K rpm if you're just cruising at speed and not accelerating, but generally the 8 likes to be revved. Loves to be revved. The power doesn't really kick in until you approach 4-5K on the tach, and it's fun to buzz around town and on twisty roads at 5-8K all day.
"rev high before shutting off the motor" is an entirely different thing. That is Mazda's suggestion on how to avoid flooding in a particular circumstance: the engine's cold, you turn it on, and for some reason you have to turn it off right away, before it's had a chance to warm (which it does when you let it run for even a few minutes). In that particular scenario say it's morning and you want to wash your RX-8. You fire her up, back her out of the garage into the driveway, and then immediately turn her off so you can wash the car. In that and only that scenario, you would rev the engine to 3K and hold it there for 10 seconds. But for normal shut down with a warm engine, you simply turn the engine off. Just as you would with any other car. It's that simple.
