No compression in rotor one

Hey guys little back story,

I have a 2004 rx8 140,000kms on the motor, motor starts fine idles a little rough tho, but just the other day the car died after I redlined it, was coming up to a red light so I popped it into neutral and car died/stalled out, took about 5-10mins to get it up and running again but would die once I restarted it again, had to keep rpms above 1500 so it didn’t stall out I managed to get it home, and waited about 24hrs then tried driving the car again, it wasn’t dying on my anymore still had the rough idle though, so I took it to a mechanic who preformed a compression test and said rotor one has no compression, I was quoted 7500$ for new engine plus installation, I find that price bizarre, does anyone know where I can order a motor from a safe secure site, and I’ll get a buddy to install it, or if you guys think I can still get a few kms out of this motor without cause damage to other components of the car. Thanks would appreciate the help guys.

Where are you located?
You can buy an engine from Mazda or RotaryResurrection, Pineapple Racing, Pettit, Derwin Tuning, etc whichever is closer. Those are the reputable ones, there may be others.

Are those US $'s? It's not crazy for an all-up replacement if they're canadian dollars, for example.

Derwin is in Quebec so might be easiest to arrange shipping, but I don't know if they specifically ship. Most of the other ones do. You might check the Canada sub-forum for mention of shops, I remember something about one in Alberta, but no name to put to it.
Mazda dealer is always a legitimate option.

thank you, was quoted 4k for just the motor brand new seems pricey but guessing going thru Mazda would be the best option eliminate the middle man

That's about what it costs for a known good engine.
You can buy used JDM or whatever engines, but its a crapshoot and generally not recommended.

Thats about right. Rebuilders generally charge $3500-$4000 for one of their engines. Mazda reman scares me a bit because no telling how long it's just been sitting on the shelf.
