No crank but air pump whines?

New to website, son has 04 manual trans, 110,000 miles. Engine has always been a slow starter. Then occasionally would not crank. Meaning engine doesn't turn. Then might start later in day (when it was warmer?) Can hear whine (air pump?) when it should be cranking but isn't. Has NEW battery and NEW alternator. Will start when pushed. I am not a car guy, but was the starter exhibiting signs of wearing out and now has finally died? Thanks for your help, son is away at college and his problem is my problem now....also I can push car in 6th gear with foot out the door so engine is not siezed or anything

Gerry

As far as new starter goes, get an S2 starter. (Series 2.) Stronger starter motor. Works better. As far as engine health, when were plugs, coils, and wires changed?

Not sure about plugs, wires, etc. New clutch over the summer. Mazda dealer loves this kid and his car. Absolute money pit.

Thanks for the help!
