oil level question
#1
I recently did a oil change where I switched to 5w30 oil since then I have driven 430 miles with no noticeable drop in oil level and it has me fairly concerned. It was filled to just above the max line but, I figured that it would burn enough to take it below that line in a week anyway. Is it possible that it was overfilled more than I thought and is staying at the same place on the dipstick due to that? I added slightly more than 4 quarts when I did the change with an oil filter so I wouldn't think it would be overfilled that much. Also there are absolutely no other issues with the way the car runs and if anything it seems to run smoother than before. Should I be concerned?

You will be okay. I always fill with five quarts and the level is just over a mm or two above the max line on the dipstick. An RX-8 with the 6-speed manual transmission can take 7 quarts of oil because of the two oil coolers. Even if you jack and tilt the car side to side to drain the old oil out, you will only get less than four quarts. Remember, the engine is supposed to burn oil.
By the time I have driven the car at 1,500-2000 miles(85% in the highways), my level is already close to the low line on the dipstick and always change it, despite having that oil for only two months.
If you are concerned, you can always check the air filter box for excess oil. For the 2004 RX-8s before the TSB, there is a nipple on the filler neck and a hose connecting that to the accordion tube of the air intake. If you did add too much, you will notice the oil settle in the accordion tube, post-MAF. If it is dirty, change the air filter and clean the tube, MAF, and the throttle body. Raise your RX-8 up and drain half a quart of oil out.
Best picture I have in file:

Grace thanks but I think the OP was asking about the fact that the oil is not droping and is consernd that the MOP is not pumping oil into the housing to lub the apex seals. If this is the proble there is a DIY on cleaning and checking the MOP lines for clogs start premixing with two cycle oil if you realy concerned. Not sure how to check to see if the MOP is working.

I have driven the same if not a bit harder for those 430 miles and usually I see it drop by about an eighth of the way between the lines. What concerns me is that I have not seen it drop noticeably after that distance. I'll just drive it and keep a close watch once I see it move I'll quit worrying.

Drive it hard for a week then check the oil level. I had the same worry once and had the oil drained and it was NOT overfilled. I just had not put enough load on the engine for the omp to use a lot of oil. BTW I also premix.

It's funny because, I also leak oil from the back of the pan where there is a substantial dent from before I owned the car. The other day I pulled into the driveway and could follow the drips to my car from the road.
