P0456 CEL stalling engine

I've read a lot about this code and everyone says gas cap, but can the gas cap really stall your engine. The only code that i'm getting is the p0456, I was driving up hill in 100f weather and it started sputtering and losing power so I down shifted to try to get more power and it completely died. I tried restarting and it just would not start, after being towed home for 3 hours, I tried it again and it started. So is this just a gas cap issue or is it something more serious?

Thanks for any help.

A faulty gas cap is the most common reason for that code, but it's not the only place a leak can occur.

No, that leak isn't stalling your engine, you have other problems. How old is your ignition? It could be failing and clogging your cat up, killing your power in both ways.

Many other things could be causing it, but I gather you haven't read the new owner basics, so it's probably the primary problem point being neglected.

Fuel pump is the next thing I'd point at then. They can become suspect as early of around 60,000 miles, and can cause power loss, shut off from over heat, and not allow restarting until the pump has cooled down.

Sounds reasonable, will give it a try. And good way to test or just replace?

I think all testing methods are with the fuel pump out of the car. Try a google search for site:rx8club.com fuel pump all failure modes

It's a big thread, but if there is anything you can do to test, it will be noted in that thread.

I have the same issue with my 8. I had the fuel pump replaced, bought it used with 30,000 miles on it.

A few other codes came up as well that dealt with my CAT( if I remember correctly) and a small vaccum leak. CEL and Radiator light is on.

Took the SSV out and cleaned it out.
Replaced Coils and Spark plugs

Brand new starter.
Car smokes every once in a while and still will not start if the car has just been shut off. I have to wait about 5-10 mins to try and start her back up.

Just curious to know if anything you have done has solved the problem. I have done tons of research myself.

Good luck!!
