Planning on buying

I have found an 04 Rx8 with a recent rebuild with paper work on it and I知 thinking about purchasing. It isn稚 the cleanest looks Wise but with that rebuild I知 optimistic. I知 getting a great deal on it (about a grand) and I was just wondering what I should do after I buy it as preventative precautions and what I should know about owning this car. Just your casual classic car guy wanting to learn more about these rotaries!

Welcome! Looks not terrible. There are a few things missing in the engine bay: strut bar, engine cover, etc. But that cosmetic stuff, at least what's visible is not bad at all.
Best place to get started is rx8help.com, there is a New/Potential Owner guide there.

The main question is who did the engine rebuild. Why are they selling for only 1k? That doesn't even begin to cover the rebuild, and if it's all good, they could be asking for more.

He痴 a family friend and they bought that car as their sons first car. They took a loan out to help build his credit. They got the rebuild a while back and it has been driven once a week just so it wasn稚 sitting since they parked it. So the rebuild was a while back.

Right before he parked it they got new yoko tires on it and he just wanted money back for what was spent on the tires and I was in a rough spot vehicle wise so it all worked out!

I actually was just able to purchase it due to him waiting all these months for the bank to release the title so that痴 the cause for the late response I値l check out that website and hopefully I don稚 run into too many issues with this vehicle!

Auto or manual?

Change all fluids, new coils, plugs, wires (so you know theyre good and how many miles)
Even though its rebuilt, get compression test so you at least know engine health. After that, you can start adding parts to the car id say

Welcome! I have owned 2 RX-8s and would love to have a third if my wife would let me. Other than the high maintenance for the car from scheduled oil changes, top-off oil, changing coils and plugs (Authentic MAZDA OEM ONLY Parts and not third party!), warming up the motor and such as stated in the "New and Potential Owners START HERE!" and from the other members.

I currently own 1 RX-8 now and had a good 5 years with it until it died in the middle of the road while driving one summer morning. I attempted to fix the car and found the engine bay very simple and working with the transmission and everything was much easier than a regular car. Then again, I've only owned RX-8s and a Camry (which I hardly work on). There's a lot to learn and hopefully we would get new rotaries in the future from Mazda.
