Premix - Where to buy?
I'm back at it, after nearly a decade. Feels like a lot has changed, or maybe I just forgot everything.
Anyway.
I didn't use premix on my previous car, but would like to on this one. I just can't seen to find anything suitable locally or online? At least nothing online that either has somewhat affordable shipping or will even ship to Canada. (I'm in Alberta)
I've been looking for Idemitsu's premix, but have had no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions of where I should look or what might be easier to get?

I use Lucas Semi-Synth or Mystik that are JASO FD rated. As Loki said, it's readily available in CT stores. I usually buy a few bottles when there's a sale.

Thanks, guys. I picked up some Lucas for now. Might get some of that AMSOIL that apex1 mentioned. Looks like it can be ordered directly from AMSOIL and can get it in 189ml bottles, which should be pretty close to the right amount for a full tank adding some convenience.

FYI....the price at mazdatrix wasn't as good as I thought, they charge shipping and handling. Ebay was free shipping and no handling.

I double checked ebay's site. It said the same as above. Can't remember where I heard about the cat. I would think if it cleans the exhaust ports, that should be helpful for the cat as well.

this is what ive been buying in quarts from autozone because its most accesible. my advance auto doesnt carry anything more than the small bottles and i dont see any reason for anything "fancier". this exceeds jaso-fd
as long as you are NOT getting tcw-3 rated stuff you are ok.. they all say they have excellent additives and detergents blah blah...
IF you have an oreilys near you thats the best option because they carry full quarts or gallons of lucas, royal purple, and valvoline 2 cycle.. im a quart guy
at the moment i am bypassing the OMP (no shaft) and mixing around 150:1 about an oz per gallon .. 6 gallons /$20 ish i put in 150ml

In general I agree with most are probably about the same. That's why I used to use amsoil. However idemitsu is specifically designed for rotaries and I've got to believe there are additives that are more appropriate and beneficial to rotaries. I can tell you when I switched from amsoil to idemitsu, I definitely noticed a difference in performance.

well you gotta realize the only difference that oil knows is metal composition and temperature.. to my knowledge rotaries use the same iron and steel any other motor does.. but get hotter.. the gas is the same gas...
when you add the oil to a fuel its not changing the fuel or mixing with it until you are atomizing it in the combustion chamber so its really just a matter of how clean the afterburn is .. the treatment of metal cant be any different only the lubricity effect at said temp, which will be different for rotaries yes because hotter
for said reason being hotter is exactly where you get the contaminants/carbon build up in an oil/fuel that is not clean. here steps in the jaso and iso requirements.. if you are meeting or exceeding one or more of these requirements is the only real difference so idemitsu exceeds them all and definitely is NOT dirty where some of the others may be slightly . the differences here are about as small as getting gas from different stations and saying you are a "shell only" guy doesnt really make your car run any better just ensures its running optimal

There's a thread at rx7club where they mixed several premix solutions in an ethanol blend and left them for some time. Idemitsu seemed to not dissolve fully.

interesting. i dont actually have science to back any of my statements up i prefer to just ramble as if i were intelligent its fun.. lol
i have never used idemitsu and have also never had a rotary engine failure.. not that they are related
all i know is what works and so far my engine is still running! so much help i am i know...

No problem mate! I just posted it for the discussion.
Idemitsu had lead when it was legal. Now I think any quality premix solution jaso fd compliant will do the job for anyone who can't find the brand.

I certainty like the idea of an oil designed around a rotary. However it also is labeled as a racing oil which usually means it does not play nice with emissions equipment. I am a not aware of any evidence that Idemitsu is any better or worse compared to other modern, low ash oils for our application.
For that matter, solid proof as to the benefits of premixing any oil are elusive. Considering that, I would not get caught up in the brand of oil too much. JASO FD seems to be a reasonable modern standard to apply. Other than that go off of price and availability.

Regarding idemitsu not dissolving completely, I just read a caution not to use it with ethanol. They said the 10% blend was ok to use. For a while I was using a no ethanol gas and noticed a slight improvement in performance. It was only 88 1/2 octane so I went back to 10% 91 octane. In Colorado, because of altitude, the highest octane is 91. Low end is 85. I may go back to no ethanol just to see if I notice any difference again.
