Hi All,

Had my 8 just over 3 weeks and already having some issues. I did a lot of research on this forum and the specific car I got before buying, yet still picked up a car that had issues!? Go figure!

I'm having 2 main issues with the car. The well know steering failure and hot start issue.

Didn't know about either of these issues until after the 80 mile drive home...

The steering issue doesn't bother me, its manageable and I am yet to get round to the first step of cleaning the connectors.

My main concern is the hot start issue though. I'm getting quite worried now that I might need a new engine, but surely not? ... My 8 has only done 38k! and has a good solid service history.

I had issues starting the car hot in the first week of having it but I assumed I was flooding the engine as I stalled it a lot whilst getting used to it.

However, yesterday I had real trouble. Admittedly I did about 4 short 2-3 miles journeys, but each time i came to start it, it would take at least 3 attempts.

I'm in two minds though if this was actually down to a hot start issue as yesterday morning before driving the car, I topped up the oil with 5W-30 Castrol GTX and have to say it started up the best it had so far. But obviously the oil is different when at operating temporature and I've now read other posts with someone saying use 10W-40 and do not use 5W-30 as its too thin...

Can anyone relate or advise?

I'm far from the most expert here, but if you go through the usual, battery, sparks, spark wires, coils and look which starter motor you have (didn't mentioned what year the car is) and still have the same issue, you may very well be looking at a new engine.

Before you panic though, check out the sticky about trouble starting and see if anything else in there rings a bell with your cars symptoms and all the best.

Im trying to listen to it but all I can hear is the damned japanese geisha music overpowering everything else. Don't get me wrong its nice to listen to when im relaxing but its too overpowering in the vid.

Sorry forgot to mention its an 04', so it won't have the improved starter motor...

And apologies for the poor video (its not mine) but its the closest i could find on YouTube to my issue, others are scarily bad.

Should also mention that I'm lucky enough to have 12 months warranty on the car so I'm not worried about fronting the cost either, its just that I want to enjoy it a bit before having to do things to it and so far its not gone well

Where does everyone stand on oil thickness and start-up issues?

Take a peek at that thread. He rebuilt the engine himself recently and seems to have a very good handle on what to look for "etc."
