programming a 2008 RX-8 with the credit card remote
I've read the procedure programming the remote on an RX-8 but that only seems to extend to 2004 models I have a 2008 and want to know if the procedure would be the same for the credit card type of remote. I've been told that if the procedure does not work properly it would disable my engine and I would not be able to start the car from then on. I could use everyone's advice since the dealer wants $130 to program the remote and I just spent over $400 just to buy a new remote and the key.

Advanced Keyless Entry (AKE / credit card keys) was introduced in 2006, all prior RX-8's used a traditional flip key. Lower trim level cars for 2006 and forward also used the traditional flip key, unless equipped with AKE.
If you have two operational AKE keys, you can program additional keys on your own. If you only have one (or none), then you have to bring the car to Mazda or a locksmith with the appropriate programmer. It is very annoying, but Mazda was looking at it from a security perspective. If someone had access to your car and a key (say valet), that person could clone your key and steal your car at their leisure. Now that person would have to have the expensive programmer, which theoretically is restricted in sale to verified business entities.
I've been trying to work around this as well since the credit cards were lost for my car when I bought it. I have new credit cards, pending programming. I was able to cut and program the transponders for my key blades (using FORSCAN Pro), however, there are no provisions in the software for programming the AKE. I'm to the point of just paying the dealer to get it done, which annoys me given how easy (and quick) the process is with the appropriate handheld device.

Just adding a note that I was able to successfully code a new AKE/credit card for a 2009 RX-8 GT with Forscan v2.3.60 using Service Functions/RKE Remote Keyless Entry.
Note that I only had one working AKE before so two are not required to do this. The AKE was purchased from Japan (much cheaper than dealer) and was a genuine Mazda part NFY7-67-5RYB.

Seconding buying the tool and DIY. Costs about the same as taking it to a dealer (at least the shop level tool I got did), only you get all the extra stuff. Well worth the price of entry.
