Prospective owner iso advice
Hello rx8 enthusiasts! I started out by reading the threads aimed at both new members and new/prospective owners, and the info was plentiful and great. Now, I'm not going to ask 'should I buy', etc., as that's subjective.
Where I'm at is as follows: I'm an American stationed in Japan, looking at an 8 with some issues for way less than they should be selling for.
Specifics as follows:
05 Rx-8 Shinko 6 speed aero. 76k km. Price 390,000 yen (roughly $3500), then I'll have to pay JCI and licensing.
Problems: coolant level light at all throttle levels, wasn't allowed to unplug sensor to test.
Stalling at idle. Engine NOT up to temperature, no hunting idle. Digging through threads here leads me to hope it's a combination of carbon, weak spark and a fuel pump resistor.
Dealer reports that it would overheat if driven more than an hour, roughly, but no confirmation.
Check engine light. Code reader will not pull codes, the ecu is Japanese and torque pro can't read the protocol.
The situation: I'm only going to drive this in short bursts and at speeds under 100km/h (roughly 60mph, ugh). I'm stationed in Okinawa, so it's crazy hot here (upwards of 100 degrees and humid about 9 months of the year). I'm confident I could get this beauty back to life and stay under 7 grand total, so long as I don't need a new engine.
The body and interior have clearly been taken care of, but I fear the engine would have suffered in the kind of traffic here (stop and start, lights frequent, common speed limits under 40mph). Would it be advisable to operate a rotary in these conditions or would this kind of treatment be a recipe for disaster? I am unfamiliar with the platform.
Please advise.
