Redline a day keeps the mechanic away?

There's so much to learn here that it's so fun asking questions.

Title is a good attention grabber. I've heard a whole bunch of things about the rotary and have done some research, but is all the information true or necessary?

1) stepping on the gas before turning it off to clear the engine out so there's less stuff to worry about flooding with.
2) redlining daily to burn off the excess carbon. (i've heard every drive, daily, and weekly)

Thanks for any conversation that comes up

Firstly, Welcome to the forum.

Read through the new and potential owners thread linked in my SIG.

I've also heard of revving the engine to 3k or 5k for a few seconds prior to shutting it down.. It's crap honestly. The only time you really risk flooding is either when your ignition is shot or you shut it down cold but mainly a little of both.

The redlining a day to help bust up carbon, totally.

Every time i drive my car i redline it... Every Time.
As do countless others on this forum.

It's kinda like the apple a day keep the dr away thing.

Torque app i believe would track it but you need to order a dongle for your phone.

I've seen COBB Accessport? No clue what it's about, but I'll do some Google work on it

A COBB AP allows you to monitor everything the ECU see's, flash tune etc..

I haven't seen MANY N/A cars that have them but i know some owners have purchased and use them for monitoring.

You could get something that'll work WAY cheaper im sure. Unless your planning on boosting i would search for some other things.

nah, I'll probably just be working on suspension and body stuff and then work my way inside. I plan on doing some auto cross and track in the future and probably won't be needed to go boost for a long time. thanks for your words of wisdom!

Im not sure there is any real evidence that redlining the car regularly will stop / reduce buildup, but im happy to do as im told on this one...

Since I don't feel like arguing, search and make your own choice.

Granny drive your car for 2 weeks and then then redline it a few times on the free way to feel the diffrence :-)

I redline mine twice every time I drive, 2nd gear redline and 3rd gear redline :-)

Not that I'm any expert on this, but I will say that the manual for my 2009 RX-8 states that you should rev the engine to 3,000 RPM just before shutting it off if the engine is not fully up to temperature (which can be told by looking at the variable redline on the tach).

Ok.
I've only owned my rx8 since 2010... been on the forum since 2011.. I don't even remember when I became a MOD and I for sure don't know anywhere near everything about these cars. BUT, I have shut off my car many times with a healthy ignition and no CAT stone cold... never once have I had to deflood. Mine is an 04 though. Still As have countless others.

It's awesome that you actually read your owners manual but search what oil to use on that then read the again COUNTLESS accounts from people MUCH smarter than myself saying something different than the manual. My point? The manual isn't always right. Flooding is usually a result of compunding factors. Not just oh **** I shut it off cold.

Read, educate then decide. Don't just say yup okay because someone told you or you read it somewhere.

Back to work

The redline a day is pretty much bullshit, just don't beat on the car until it's fully warmed up and that will accomplish a lot more in terms of saving your engine from unnecessary wear.

Revving before you shut down was outlined in the RX-8 product update DVD put out by Mazda and the procedure makes sense to me if you understand how the engine works. In 10+ years my car was flooded twice, once when my mother moved it and shut it down cold, and once when I moved it with wet sandals and stalled it. Both times were with the stock ignition and before the MSP16 flash. But yes, a happy and healthy RX-8 should not flood.

The RX8 product update DVD can be seen here:

I have literally never seen that DVD 9k Thanks.

Travis

I see it references not using that evil synthetic oil Ultimately a waste of time. It does say about the revving before shutting down yes if the motors cold. I'll stick with what i already do and keep her healthy

Yeah who knows what happens between what the engineers say and what marketing says. You just have to accept that the Renesis is flawed from a design stand point and deal with it in whatever way you deem necessary.

Yeah it's important to let the car warm up before you drive it hard.

Google 2009 RX-8 gauges and you should notice that there is 3 red bars on the tach. Those are rev limiters for when the engine isn't warmed up yet. First one goes off after about 2 min, while the second takes around 5 min. The third is always there.. Cause it's the redline (obviously!).

I think it'd be really helpful if the S1's had this.

Yep from my after market gauge the first light goes out at 40c water temp and the second at 70c

My S1 is well monitored
I don't trust stock gauges one bit.
