Regret Selling?

Hello! My name is Austin and while I've been registered since 2012, I've never really posted. I own a 09 R3 and have had it since May 2012.

I'm getting married soon and while I absolutely love my car, I've been thinking about trading it it. I'm curious if anyone has traded theirs in for something less exciting and regretted their decision?

I'm trying to think long-term and towards a family but I still love the thrill of taking off it in! Any opinions/advice?

Don't get rid of It. I had to sell mine, and I'm dying to get one again.

My kids (2) grew up in my 8, I would never sell it. I never understood why people needed anymore room than the 8 offers for daily running around, etc. Using kids as the excuse always seemed like BS to me.

I've been saying for two years now that I'll be selling my 8. But after getting back into my 8 after test driving other cars, I am reminded of how much I love the car. I feel like I will be "just some other car" without my 8. The rotary design and sounds are so appealing to me. The way it accelerates when you hit the highway! Also I find it hard to find insurance that is cheaper then what I am paying now.

Yep, I dump a lot of money in my 8. But it is cheaper than a car payment and I have a daily that I don't have a payment on either.

If it's purely your decision, I would suggest you don't do it.
If your significant other wants you to get rid of it, then I say definitely don't do it.

Haha an overwhelming "don't sell" response. My fiancee isn't pressuring me to sell, I'm just trying to weight the pros and cons. I know I'd be saving a lot of money on gas every year, and on insurance too.

I'm 54, had my 8 over 2 1/2 years, and I haven't owned many late model cars, but I've rented a bunch for long distance road trips, and my '04 GT 8 is probably the nicest handling, quiet cabin, fun driving, and surprisingly comfortable cars I've been in.

While premium gas is expensive, and the mpg is subpar, I like the term, "Smiles Per Gallon".

Imo, although I have limited new car experience, I think anything comparable would be very expensive to buy and insure, so you may be spending even more than what you are on your 8.

Finally, probably one of the truest, and my favorite nugget of wisdom I've learned over the years;
"Don't mess with happy."

Hang on to it. Kids don't take up that much room unless you are planning to do an Angelina and adopt 20 kids one after the other. If you sell it, odds are you will kick your butt for years and wind up buying another down the road which will mean not having the service history at your fingertips. Additionally, consider the history you have with the car, personally. There is a good chance you have a fiancee BECAUSE of the 8 since a lot of the "fairer sex" tend to drool a bit over them and seem to be drawn to their owners. (If you believe that last part, have I got a piece of real estate for you!!)

Seriously, though, keep it and, if later you need a small bus-like vehicle, they are a lot cheaper to add to the fleet than a good 8.

I have given serious consideration to selling mine and have even bought a couple of potential replacements. The replacements are gone, and the 8 is still here. Nothing I have tried measures up in terms of the joy the car brings me.

Mine is for sale for a financial reason, and to tell you the truth I just wish to win a certain amount of money in order to keep it... in summary keep it if you can, this car is unique.

After I had to trade my first one in, I kicked myself for two years and then bought a second. Hope this helps.

It does help for sure, but I'm still up in the air. I hate negotiating and having to go to a dealership so that is also something I need to think about.

Anyone have advice on how to handle car salesman?

Have you looked at insurance for cars first? No point in test driving something and liking it, only to find that it is more expensive then your 8. My insurance wants another $1,200 a year to insure a 2014 Mazda 3.

theoretically, it's cheaper to just keep it. You will just have to do another deal for one later! :P :D

I have State Farm and it'd be about another $400 a year for insurance but looking at other insurance companies, I can get the same coverage at Geico for almost $350 a year less than what I'm paying now.

Tried selling my GT 8 twice with no success after moving overseas for a while, decided after the 2nd attempt to just keep it at my parents' place until I got back.

Let's just say I'm really glad I did. Living in the Bay Area now & the roads and weather here are perfect for the 8. Pure joy every weekend, and my fuel expense still beats monthly payments on a newer car that wouldn't come close to sounding or handling like this one does, anyway. Insurance is pretty great, too.

TL;DR: Don't sell!

Ironically, I have always wanted a FD but got an 8 instead because of the fact that I could fit my two kids in it.

Bought my 05 practically new and sold it in 2012 due to needing money to put down on a house. I had regretted it ever since. So I saved up some money and bought another RX-8 this month. Now the addiction is so bad I want to buy a second... Moral of the story, yes you will regret it. Maybe not right away but you will as soon as you see another one on the road. Trust me on this.
