TX Rotary powered Opel Gt

Joining this group because I'm researching for my Opel. I bought the car two years ago with the engine blown. It had a dry, sump, bridge ported 12A with an IDA downdraft. An old school race engine producing 190hp at the crank. The car top speed was recorded at 155mph. The car weighed 1992lbs wet and ready to race.
I'm looking at running a RX8 engine with a mazdatrix adapter to run the IDA. From my research, I should have the same horsepower.
I saw a rebuild 6 port auto for sale on ebay, I'm wondering if there will be any fittement issues with a manual trans and starter? I'll need to figure out what flywheel and counter weight.
The other issue is a stand alone ignition system. I have an MSD box, I'll need to get a second box so I can run a split between the leading and trailing. If i'm using the car for track and street does running a locked timing make sense?
Your comments and suggestions are appreciated
Thanks

You would need the Renesis engine, etc., etc.and a stand alone ECU to make this work reliably. I don't see any point in running carbs. And of course there will be fitment issues, it would all have to custom made mounts, etc. Honestly, if you have to ask these questions then you are not really qualified to attempt this.

9KRPM@ San Antonio, we are Neighbors :-)
I have a well equipped home machine shop and I have the capacity to do the fabrication and customization for my project.
After much consideration, I've decided to run a Renesis keg with my 48IDA downdraft. I want the old school look and i like to tinker.
Im not sure what questions I had that would lead you to say Im not qualified....
Maybe we could have a beer and talk shop sometime :-)

This stuff here just sort of leads me to that conclusion honestly, it wasn't meant as an insult. Installing a modern 13B-MSP engine and trans into a decades old Vega will certainly result in fitment issues. Custom fabricated engine mounts, trans mounts, etc will all be needed. And the Renesis is a modern engine, it will require modern engine management unless you build some sort of hybrid engine using an older 13B front cover with a distributor, custom wiring, and whatever else would be needed.

It can work, it will just require a lot of homework and know and the results may not be what you are expecting. Trying to make a modern 13B carburetored just makes no sense to me.

Really, maybe if it were a Cosworth Vega that would be ok.
Did you know the Opel GT was one of the first cars to have its aerodynamics designed in a wind tunnel? It had less coefficient than a period 911 Porsche.
Here is a link to a vid of my car before I took ownership:

So why do you think Mazdatrix would bother manufacturing an adapter for the Renesis to run a 13B manifold? Guys like me like retro perhaps. I want to keep my car analog using a period correct racing carburetor. The ignition is the only digital equipment I will use.

I can run the ignition two ways. Using a XDI2 i can run a mapped ignition with programable settings for leading and trailing plugs. Or i can add a second MSD box that would allow me to retard the trailing plugs.

I have no clue why they make it, I have only seen or heard of two Renesis powered FB RX-7's and neither were carbureated. But if you have your mind set on it then I wish you good luck. You might want to search the RX-7 club as well, there is some discussion about it there.

This is my favorite quote from that discussion:

Carbureting a Renesis seems a bit like retrofitting a propeller onto an F-22

Maybe the F-22 doesn't have a propellor, but the F-35B does.

Opel, as you proceed with the project, can you keep us posted? There may not be much interest in anyone else doing it, but I think a lot of us would love seeing it done and how it works out.

The car kind of reminds me of a 1st Gen 7, good luck with the project!
