RX-8 Owner from Finland

Greetings from Finland!

Just thought to share with you my RX-8 which I bought in january.

Before bying, I had read this forum and all other places for things to worry about when bying one, still I had to get one! And finally, after a year hoping to get one, I did!

So, I found cheap (budget ) 2004 RX-8 in lightning yellow, leather seats and high power engine which had 79k on the clock

Previous owners had installed some chinese exhaust header, remus rear silencer and huge wing on the boot :D

Originally, the car started nicely, no rattles or anything, i drove it about 2000miles and then the worst possible thing happened

Huge oil leak, terrible vibration, took it to my workplace to see what's going on.

Did a compression test for it and didn't look too good..

That's around 53psi, per rotor

IMO there's really nothing useful left in that engine?

Currently im on the look out for a new engine. From Mazda dealer new engine is 6400euros which is about $8700 ?

Sorry about picture quality, I only have my iphone

Hello again!

Life of this RX-8 got a turn for better!

Bought a slightly damaged one for spares:

Did a compression test and it showed around 100psi per rotor, not big humps between apexes

Taking that one for parts which are still useful and scrapping the rest.

Slightly damaged??? Looks more like something very large tried to eat it and spat out what was left!

Seriously, though, welcome and good luck with the restoration. Hope it turns out well and you are soon back to loving the new car (yes, I DID notice the hand flipping it the bird in that one picture)

Thanks

From what i heard, that car had smashed few lamp posts and street signs and after that landed at the field about 100 meters from the road...

I would guess something like 200km/h, but who knows.

Trying to get it stripped this week and continue working on yellow one next week

Just so you know, the driveshaft is carbon fiber and, if not damaged, might be worth some cash to resell as will be the case with many other undamaged parts. There are sections of forums set aside for selling off such parts as well as aftermarket parts. Have a look when you have time and you might just recoup a nice chunk of what you laid out in repairs.

Damn... Eccentric shaft bent about 2,5mm from oil pump pulley

Luckily it's not that expensive

Stripped engine apart today

Apexes weren't worn badly! Just lots of carbon which didn't let seals to move properly.

Tomorrow I'll be giving rotors proper cleaning. I should also get my eccentric shaft tomorrow

If everything goes as planned, i'll be starting this one up over the weekend!

Parts car is resting outside, taking just a few more parts off it and then off to scrap!

Eccentric shaft is now like new, and they also made new bearings.

Much has happened since last post, assembled that engine shown above with old seals, tried it, worked somehow, took it out again and then bought new rebuild kit!

Here's few photos:

Drove it 100km, and works like a charm!
