OH RX-8 For Sale - Not much interest

I have a 2011 RX-8 that I would like to sell. I've really enjoyed the car over the last 5 years and it looks and runs great. I advertised it on both Craiglist and AutoTrader.com about a month ago. I have not had one serious inquiry. Only scam attempts and out of state bottom feeders.

Is there a really small demand for these cars? The only offer I have so far is a wholesale price from a dealer.

Please advise, how do you market an RX-8 for sale at a fair price?

John

I know a lot of folks don't like the corporate front fascia of the 2nd gen, it was for this reason I opted to go with an S1, despite the reliability/performance improvements of the s2.

How much are you asking for it?

Huh.
If only there was a forum that had a For Sale section tailored specifically for RX8 enthusiasts.

Exactly why I remain on the fence on which one to get. Heart says series 1, brain says series 2. I too am curious how much you are asking f=ma, as well as mileage.

Mileage 53k. Asking price $13k, slightly over KBB value but it's negotiable. I did put this FS on the MW forum being I'm in Ohio. We'll see how that pans out.

I really wanted to get a feel for the demand for these cars and their resale value. From my perspective, my RX-8 has a been not only a fun car but a good reliable car. However, I think it only appeals to a niche market. The mass market doesn't have much interest. Opinions?

Also, in general, how do Mazda's hold their resale value? Probably not as well as Hondas and Toyotas I think.

resale value is low unfortunately, but varies by region and country. We dont know where you are located, but posting it on the FS forum here in the RX8 club, and on craigs or ebay out west could reach an enthusiast ready to pay near your price. It being a 2011 with low mileage helps. Is it a Sport or Touring model, MT or AT ?

The price is a little high for a Sport but you need to press the fact that it still has the 8 year /100k engine warranty.

But yeah the RX-8 market sucks, the reputation of poor reliability that carried over from the RX-7 just got worse with the S1 RX-8 and so the S2's suffered. I have seen some really sweet RX-8 builds with probably 20k+ in them easy go up for sale over the past few years and almost all of them sold for nothing and were parted out.

Yes, the RX-8 is most definitely a limited appeal sports car for RX-8 enthusiasts only! And by that, I mean people who know and love the RX-8, either through ownership or having an interest from following the car online and/or through friends. So the car does not have mass appeal.

That's the bad news. The good news is that RX-8 lovers are out there and will happily pay a fair price for a well-maintained car. In fact, they'll consider themselves lucky to have found a nice 8 in good condition that's been loved by its current owner; after all, there aren't many 8s like that out there. (I would happily pay good money for a mint 40th Anniversary edition if I were looking for a new 8, which I'm not.)

So, as previously said, you have to try selling it here, perhaps the RX-7 forum and anywhere online where people who really know cars gather. Also, if there are any RX-8 get togethers within 50 miles of you, it might be worth detailing your car and showing up with a big FOR SALE sign on the window. Word will quickly spread that a nice 8 is available.

Finally yeah, I'd be looking for an S1, too. That S2 grill is an embarrassment, a corporate mandate that has absolutely nothing to do with the original design concept of the original. The S2 side vents are ugly, too. (However I do feel the S2 tail lights are a little nicer than the originals.)

John

I remember the day i traded my RX8 in i was so happy to have a new car. i have regretted that decision .

whats making you get rid of it? looks like its been well kept from the picture.

from the condition and warranty that looks like a fair deal to me. i am in the market looking for a r3 right now but i have to go through a dealer for trade ins.

I'm just ready to move on to something newer, something a little more practical and that gets better gas mileage.

Craigslist isn't twitter either, you're not limited in the description. Write things out instead of using so many abbreviations.

It does look absolutely fantastic, but as others have said the s2 has a corporate look that many looking for a sports car won't like. Personally I agree with them, but there are tons of people who actually use their brains instead of their eyes so I'm sure you'll find a buyer.

Looks are subjective but I like the looks of both the S1 and S2.

There are elements of both that I prefer; Fenders: S1 hands down, Oil cooler inlets: S2, front grill opening: S1 (the S2 looks too much like a dopey grin) The curve on the bottom of the bumper of the S2 is more appealing to me, however the whole thing seems a little more rounded than the S1, which I prefer the angles on. .... This is of course comparing the R3 front bumper to the Mazda speed one.

Your ad is pretty minimal, it's just a list of stuff. You're not selling it.
Definitely add the 8year/100,000 mile warranty and raise some emotion!

Yeah and I think the Spirit R headlights would be a perfect upgrade for the S2, the regular S2 headlights have too much chrome in them.

This is a good idea. I would go a step further and suggest that you take it to a Cars and Coffee event, or a general Mazda meet in your area.

Thanks, Hopefully it will. I'd hate to wholesale it to a dealer.
