RX8 SR20DET swap
Hi Guys,
My name is Ron. I'm building a RX8 for 99% drifting and 1% road use. I wanted to post in the Tech section but don't have the rights to post there.
I've bought a series 1 Rx8 with blown engine, removed engine and bought a SR20DET engine from a nissan S14. I chose this engine because of the weight / tuning potential and size. Had a special oil pan build so it would clear the engine cross member. We have welded the engine mounts and removed the steering rack and replaced for a Mazda Mx5 steering rack. I'm now halfway past the swap and before I started read alot about the wiring issues because of the Can-BUS.
To cut a long story short, I've mounted a GT30 like turbo (ebay) as a mock up so we could see how this would fit. This fits very nice but I will have to remove the ABS pump. as i understand the ABS pump on the RX8 controls a lot of things like tacho/speed etc. so I have the following questions :
- Does anyone here have any experience with removing the ABS pump and especially the electronics on it
- If I remove the ABS pump and the engine wiring harness, will the interior stuff like heater / radio / dash lighting / pinkers etc. still work if I keep the ECU's in place
I originally planned on putting back the engine loom and just swap over the sensors from the RX engine to the SR, but since I know have to remove the ABS unit that idea has gone out of the window
This is a track car, but still need the above if I want to be able to drive it on the road.
thanks

One of the problems with swaps is integrating things like the dash and control systems across the different platforms
I think that the biggest problems are getting the power steering to work and the DBW throttle. Since you are using neither of them I think you will be OK.
The Speedo is run off the wheel speed sensors...and I think that will work. Getting the tach to work may be an issue , What are you using for an ECU to run the engine..often there are dash units that will have Tach and speedo run off GPS that will be adequate for occasional street use
Easier to help you with specific issues when they arise

If you dont mind man could you post some pix up of the swap especiallythe oil pan/subframe work and any other mounts you had to fab up? Im trying to do something similar,i have a ka-t laying around and a motor less rx8 thats also gonna be a street/track drift car haha. One more thing, exactly which mx5 steering rack did you use and what all did you do to make it fit perfectly? Sorry for so many questions man but nobody really has a good write up on this swap and if they do they dont have the pix everybody is really looking for.

Yes, please contribute something to the "frankenstein" swaps thread once you have enough of a post count to do so. This seems like a cool project and people will appreciate a nice build thread on it.

Custom motor mounts, oil pan, headers, rad mounting., likely steering rack, exhaust, all cold side plumbing.....fuel system mods....and then ECU to get it to run...and keep the RX8 systems happy so the dash and other stuff still works

Are you prepared to spend at least 20k in time and parts combined? If not, then quit while you are ahead. Also, what dannobre said. If you have to ask, you aren't ready.

If you have to ask you need to do a lot more research.

Thanks for the help and I am still doing research but I'm coming up with nothing
