Is the rattle new or did it always rattle? Our transmissions do make a marbly noise when you press the pedal. If it doesn't go into gear, it's likely not disengaging fully. You could check that the pedal is correctly adjusted, but every other possible cause will need more wrenching. Does it creep forward in gear with the clutch pressed on level ground? That would confirm the clutch is dragging.
I would work my way from the pedal deeper into the trans. Check pedal adjustment, check for fluid leaks, check for leaks at the slave cylinder, and after that you're looking at taking down the trans to see what's up with the clutch. If the rattle is new, the pilot bearing may have failed.

I’d check the clutch pedal bracket before attempting to adjust anything or looking further. The bracket is a known problem area. It cracks around the bolt locations and then allows excess flex which prevent normal clutch operation. I had to remove mine to see the cracks. It’s just a few fasteners and a couple of electrical connectors to remove it. Takes just a couple of minutes to do.
