A frunk/trunk isn't comparable to a hatch, though. The storage dimensions make it less practical.
It's also a two-seater. So essentially, it's as practical as a Corvette. Hot hatches are more practical than that.
The car is made in the late 90s, so it's not really that fast.

Yeah a broke company can’t afford to do this even as a loss leader to attract sales...
Toyota has had more problems ever since they teamed up with Mazda to make cars. These corporate mergers of all these Japanese companies with others/foreign companies are not good signs.
If people keep buying jelly-doughnut cross overs I think the industry is finished.

Automotive fashions are just that... fashion. Things will change again in 10-20 years.
Mazda's push to become Japan's Saab (quirky premium brand) is a big gamble.

The big trend is the push on hybrid and eventually EV... Nothing you can really do about that, and they make a cheap EV toaster, I personally will also be interested in one as a city driver.
northzone and I met up the other day and we agree that the 8 is the last dedicated Mazda rotary car. If Mazda gives the idea another go, it will probably be an MX-5 with a rotary engine, which honestly I would be more than happy about. Car weighs nothing anyway so the engine doesn't even have to be that powerful. 250 BHP and we have a little rocket right then and there.
But then again, so would a 2.0T work. Give the current 2.0 engine a very light boost for some low-end grunt and it would also be an appealing car to me.

edit: Make Wagons Great Again!
The load height for the rear hatch is lower! And they handle better.

I personally would go for a hybrid route. Some sort of petrol engine as at least a generator will be welcome in my book. Because knowing myself I can’t remember to charge my phone let alone my car...I still forget to bring grocery bags to the store for a law that was passed 3 or 4 years ago.

Having the gas engine helps if you don't have a garage/underground parking lot with charging ports.

I like "Make Wagons Great Again". My wife has a 2011 BMW 3-series that we bought used (no issues in 5 years and 50K miles - better than I can say for the 50K I put on my brand new 2007 Honda Accord and was excited to sell when I bought the RX8 in 2015). I now own a GK-series Honda Fit (small hatch = wagon) as my DD - sorry Mazda the used Fit was way cheaper than the used 3-series hatch b/c no one wants the Fit. If Mazda would sell the 6-series wagon here or the Accord wagon I'd buy. Couldn't find in the USofA a Acura TSX wagon that didn't have the engine eating oil issue. Didn't want a VW wagon for reliability reasons.
