FL Series 2: BHR Ignition Kit -- Tight fit, but got it working.

This thread was originally about the fit of the kit. It's a very tight squeeze, but it does fit. My only suggestion would be that the wires are color coded or something. I def should have paid more attention (I was paying attention to firing order but not to the length of the wires).

** Edit: This has been resolved and it was due to a faulty ignition kit, or incorrect installation. The BHR ignition kit is an awesome product. Never use penetrating oil to clean out spark plug ports. It'll flood the engine. o.O **

Yeah. Most of us do. I have one in my car right now. The bolts were a little bit of a pain without some tools and due to northern rot, but beyond that it wasn't terrible.

Double post - Do you have an actual BHR kit, or one masquerading as one? I'm pretty sure Charles will be along shortly to ask you for photos and get information, as he's pretty damn good about customer service.

I literally bought the kit from their website. The first cable, closest to the front of the car, is so tight there's no way it's going to seat down onto the plug, let alone clip into the wiring bracket. It's the longer of the "shortest cables".

Also, I've used the contact us forum on the BHR website and no response yet. If I can't figure out why these wires are so tight and won't fit, this BHR kit is coming out and I'm ordering OEM coils/wires and paying for overnight shipping. I'll just have to sell this BHR kit later.

I'll try and take some pictures and capture the problem so you can see what I'm talking about.

I'd like to. Oh! I just remembered - Charles is currently at Rotorcon, He may not be back in the office until tomorrow. You MIGHT try hitting him up on Facebook, he might be able to help. 9K? Can anyone else with a BHR kit give some insight?

I posted pics but it said a moderator has to approve them. Not sure how long that will take. :-/

A lot of other pics show the wires have some slack. Mine have no slack at all and I can't figure out why.

All the wires should be the same length IIRC. As long as you've got the pack installed correctly you should have a little slack on each wire. I'm at work, and unfortunately I don't have my 8 otherwise I'd grab some photos for you.

Each wire this kit came with is a different length as are the OEM wires the car came with. There are two shorter wires, with one being just a tad shorter, and two longer wires, again, with one of the wires being slightly shorter as well.

The kit I received fit my 2011 pretty much perfectly. The wires do not clip into the holders, but they are too large in diameter, being 8mm wires, not too short. Nothing a zip tie couldn't easily solve. The kit is a tight fit, but it does fit.

Charles provides excellent customer service. Contact him on a business day, and he will help you sort things out.

Well, I guess they are supposed to be so tight they are being pulled on putting high tension on each wire. I'm just looking at other pictures and that's not what I'm seeing in other installs.

I did make the mistake of putting in the kit thinking I can push the wires into the coils after it was in. That was a mistake. These wires have some annoying design that forces you to center a tiny pin hole connector onto the coils internal pins. They don't slide in as easy as the OEM coils/wires.

I don't mean the wires are a tight fit. I mean the bracket and coils are a tight fit into the available space. When everything is properly fitted, the wires should have a small amount of slack.

Well, the kit does fit, it's very snug, but the kit fits. I'm not having a problem with the kit itself, it's the wires that aren't the fitting right. The first wire (L/F) that doesn't reach the required plug without being very tight.

Well, thankfully I've found a video on YouTube and this obviously brilliant (Polish?) man shows exactly which cables should plug into which coil. He is the only video/instruction set I've ever seen that's even remotely useful.

I'm confident I know what I did wrong now.

Glad you got it sorted, hopefully. WCS Charles will stick his head in here some time over the week and work with you on things if there are still issues. He's pretty good about that.

I'll let you guys know once it's all installed and working. I know it was user error. I just couldn't figure out what I did wrong. I started looking at the OEM cables and noticed Mazda used colored tape for the wires going to the trailing ports, and didn't use tape on the wires going to the leading ports. They also put these little circular clips on the two back wires. So between that and the video I found I was able to at least sort out the cable lengths.

As far as the order of the coils to harness connectors, those are obvious. They are each a unique length and it's obvious which one plugs into which coil. Not to mention years of being in a certain position has made them fall into place when plugged in correctly.

Glad you got it sorted. It is a good kit, and unfortunately the plug wires (even on stock coils) have thrown more than a few newbies for a loop. They should be colour-coded or something.

I'm definitely a newbie. That's exactly what was messing with me - the length of the wires. Everything else was easy. Yeah, it's tight, but the kit does drop down onto the factory plate. The engine harness bracket is staying out.

It would probably help a lot of newbies if the wires were obviously marked (1, 2, 3, 4) and the coils marked as well (1, 2, 3, 4), etc. It would just make things beyond obvious.

I just feel that if I'm going to own this RX8 I need to learn this kind of stuff vs relying on a shop. Before this the only thing I've ever done was change my own oil/coolant. lol

Yeah, definitely learn to DIY. Unless you have a rotary specialist near, most regular mechanics will be learning to DIY anyway, while you pay them.

Well, all she does is turn over without starting. I think I *may* have flooded my series 2. I say that because when I pulled the old plugs out I did spray some penetrating oil into the plugs to clean them out. I just checked my AGM battery and it hasn't hit 75% on the charger yet. It's possible the battery drained a bit over the last three days.

So I'm going to charge the battery for a while and try again. :-/

To be clear you're not suggesting zip tying the wires together are you?
The looms keep them separated to help prevent arcing.
