IL Series 2 RX8 Manual vs Auto Long Block Question!

Hi all!
Ive recently bought a 09 S2 rx8 manual that needs a motor. Engine is smoking badly and has been diagnosed to bad oil control rings. I have a lead on a very affordable running s2 engine and trans, only problem is it’s an automatic. I know the rear iron is different for the automatic vs manual. I’ve searched for a direct answer but can’t seem to find one. It seems there are a few people that have a few posts on manual swapping a S2 which would tell me the motors are compatible, but the threads are vague and only have a few posts. Can anyone with more experience answer this? Will a S2 automatic engine work with a s2 manual trans?

thanks For the help!

I’ve also read about people thinking the automatic engines are balanced internally differently than the manual engines. Obviously the flywheel is balanced on a manual, but I am unsure of the actual engine internals. can anyone speak to this and the previous question?

thanks!!! If the auto engine will work then I’m going to pick it up this weekend.

You really need to do some more research.
I'm not an expert on swaps, but I'm pretty sure it goes way beyond swapping the engines out.

You're not getting responses because members rarely, if ever, swap an AT for a manual.

My apologies if my original post is confusing. I’m not trying to swap transmissions. I’m just trying to swap the engines. But the Automatic S2 engines rear iron is a different part number than the manual S2 iron. I’m just wondering if my manual trans will bolt to the Auto S2 engine.

Personally, even though I claim to not know much about it, I would discourage you from doing this UNLESS you know exactly what you're getting into.
I can practically guarantee if you don't know, you'll regret it.

Most ATs really aren't worth much anymore unless they're in excellent shape with low miles.
and I'd even say an average running AT isn't worth much more than a nice 6 speed with a blown engine.

If someone can prove otherwise, I will readily admit I'm wrong.

In fact, it's so uncommon, it's not even considered in swap threads.

I really don't think so.
I get what you're saying, but I'm pretty sure you'd be opening up a huge can of worms, and you need to be aware of any problems before you buy a 200 lb boat anchor that few people would want.

I could be wrong.
I usually don't offer up opinions on swaps because I only know what I've read in passing here for the last 12 years, but I'd hate for you to make a huge mistake because no one is giving you an answer.

It's the opposite here, and it's an S1, but Kevin is a pro rebuilder, and here he talks about swapping AT to MT.

If you use some imagination in reverse, you may get an idea of what is involved in an attempt.

You might be better off rolling the dice and trying to source a junkyard MT engine from a totaled 8 that has no engine bay damage.

BigCajun, I appreciate the responses!

correct me if I’m wrong, but the link you copied was for 4port auto to 6 port MT. I understand that going from an AT car to a MT car is a huge undertaking and not worth it. I don’t see anything in that thread that talks about the differences between a MT and AT engine. My car is a MT right now and will stay a MT. Curious if I can install a AT long block in my MT car.

Yes, because it's discussed little, if at all, I was just saying if you used your imagination to see what's involved in trying to mate different engines to what comes OEM.
That may give you an idea about compatibility and the work involved.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider it.

A fellow member just told me the starters are different, for starters.

Here's a thread about some differences from 16 years ago.
