Sharing My RX8 Story

You all have probably seen me posting like a madman on here. You probably think “Why is this guy helping these noobs?” Well... maybe not all of you but at least TeamRX8. You all will never really know the help this forum has given me these past 8+ years when I first heard about it. I didn’t even start posting here until 2017 but I’ve loved every minute helping people with problems they could have fixed on their own if they knew how to search. I think it’s because people really just want to get their cars fixed and just need advice. Anyways, on with my story...

I've had 4 RX8s since 2013 and all 4 are still on the road working well. It all started when my Dad got an RX8 for my Mom back in 2013. It was a JDM 2003 AT with the stock BBS rims only available in Japan. Didnt know anything about it other than it looked really cool. But because I'm the mechanic of the family it was always up to me to maintain it. I absolutely loved working on it and learned so much about it in the process.

Around a year later, a red 2004 JDM RX8 5 speed manual popped up on the local ebay for cars saying it had lost compression. I go over there and crank it and the pulses were there, just wouldn't start. They were convinced the engine was toast. I bought it and had the engine running in about 2 hours. Compression was 7-8 bar on all rotor faces so I really scored big. Loved that car.

About 2 years later, the AT my mom got was starting to give issues. But at the time I was looking at another RX8 for her. The third RX8 was a grey 2005 AT also JDM but it ran brilliantly. He only wanted $4500 for it and it was literally perfect. I believe it had a new engine and transmission put in before it was shipped from Japan. Compression ended up being in the high 8's - low 9's. She still drives that car to this day and its spectacular.

My 4th RX8 was the same story as the red RX8. I bought it about a year ago. Owner couldnt get the engine going and I bought it extremely cheap. This one exactly the same as yours except its silver. A USDM RX8 GT 6 speed manual. I still drive this car to this very day.

My 1st RX8. JDM 2003 AT. Still working well!

My second and 3rd RX8's. The red is a 2003 JDM 5 speed manual. The grey is a 2004 JDM AT. The grey one my Mom drives now. Red one is sold but still driving.

My current and 4th RX8. USDM 2004 RX8 GT 6 speed manual.

In conclusion, I wouldn’t even be spending so much time here if I feel I didn’t owe it to this community. Other car forums for other brands of cars are nothing less than unhelpful. Any time I’ve ever had a problem with my RX8, I could come here, search the forums and figure it out on my own. Don't listen to the haters and misinformed owners. This car is extremely easy to maintain, it's just different. Excellent car, looking at importing a 2011 R3 from Japan as soon as I'm able to afford it. Thank you rx8club.com, you’ve forever changed my appreciation of this wonderful and underrated machine.

What car forums are you talking about? Just curious. In my experience, it really depends on the type of car. I go to a Honda Accord forum a lot and usually the discussions won't be as technical, but for the most part it's pretty managed and can be helpful.

The thing about this forum is that it has died down a lot from what I have heard, but that also means people who stick around are generally nice or at least helpful, just like a smaller community and that's nice in it's own rights. That also extends to seeing another RX-8 on the road, it's especially cool when you nod at each other. Had that happen a few times.

Regarding the car, while I want to try something different down the line, it was still fun, unique and provided me a gateway to fun driving in a sports car. It's good that I didn't hurt myself thanks to the low torque, and revving to 9000 RPM is just an experience. Really makes learning how to drive a manual worth it to me.

I always owned German cars. Always thought they were the best but my mind changed when I started to work on the RX8. It's just completely perfect in every way for me and my family. The German car forums are useless "see the dealer" "I never had that problem" "Check with your Porsche dealer to be sure" never any of that here. If there was ever a problem with any of my RX8's this forum helped me fix it even though I never had to make a post of my own.

In that case, I can't blame them since luxury Germans are usually pretty DIY unfriendly.

RX-8, being a Japanese vehicle, is still simple to service for what it is.
