NC Should I buy this RX8?

I am looking to buy a new car and I’ve loved the RX8 for a long time. The car would be mainly used for daily driving, getting to work and back, going to the store etc etc with the occasional long trip every few months or so. A bit of history about me is that the only car I’ve owned in the past was an 03 Cadillac CTS, ans that thing had endless problems. I did end up having to sell the car as it blew a right front which ruined all of the calipers on the car, caused some frontal damage and was the last straw for me. Anyway, I have about $4000 total for this car. It’s listed at $1500, but they said it doesn’t shift perfectly and may need a new trasmission. I’ve tried to google about this, but i couldn’t find out how much a new transmission would cost. Now my gf’s dad/brother own their own mechanic shop and could do it cheaper, but I still want to know roughly how much it would cost beforehand. I have read rhe new owners tips forum thread and still want to buy this car. I have not been up to look at it yet, but plan to do so, nor have I asked any of the recommended question to the seller yet, as I plan to do that in person. Any advice on this would be great. PS I do like the rev my car a bit when I drive, for example getting to speed quickly, driving relatively fast on the interstate, always going 5-10 mph above the speed limit. However as the RX-8 is one of my dream cars, I will take meticulous care of this thing.

It all depends on engine health. "runs" is a good start, but getting a compression test is a must. It's cheap for a reason.

Run from that car.

It has NOT been cared for. Those wheels, whatever the hell happened to the steering wheel. The Camry floor mats. The "shocker" sticker on the window. It has "transmission issue" that isn't described.

RUN AWAY. That car is best left as a parts car for somebody who balled theirs up on a race track.

My first choice wouldn't be a 2004 AT. The motor is different than all others and more difficult to find rebuild. Plus the transmission is a definite weak point. Especially since its acting up.

if you want an AT look for a 2006+. They have the same 6 port motors as the MT cars and an updated transmission

Not to mention the early ATs are about as fast as an I4 Honda Accord. 4-port is pretty slow.

I personally would recommend getting a manual but it's up to you OP. It's totally worth learning a stick for this car.

I’ve never driven a manual before but I would be willing for this car. Sadly there are not many cheap RX8s near me, most of which being manual. I do have multiple friends who could teach me, it would just take time I guess.

Ehm, this is not a car you want to buy on the cheap. You want one that's been well cared for.

IMO there is no reason to buy an auto rx8, it ruins the whole point of the car. Ripping the gears at 9500 RPMs is the whole reason to get an rx8. You can learn how to drive manual in a day, and the rx8 is an easy car for that.

Also if you ever have to ride a motorcycle in your life, it will be 10x easier to learn once you have driven a manual transmission car.
