Steering Locked

I was turning my wheels with the power off to do some maintenance, and the steering locked. This has happened to me before, and I managed to get out of it through the usual methods, but I think it's really stuck this time. Does anyone know where the bolt for the torque lock is? I can't find it on a diagram. Also, have I indented the locking mechanism by using a LOT of force to try and turn the wheel, further locking me in place? Any advice or similar situations you've solved would be much appreciated.

Have you rotated the wheel gently in the opposite direction while turning the key back? It's very strong unless you release the tension on the locking mechanism, but if you releasethe tension it comes free without any actual muscle needed.

Okay, so here's what happened. I have a 2008 GT with the smart key. My battery is disconnected so the **** covering the ignition doesn't turn. This was the holdup. As soon as I used an actual, physical backup key, I was able to get the wheels unlocked with minimal effort. I just hope I haven't damaged something with all the pulling I've done. Thanks RIWWP for the quick response. If anyone else is in my situation in the future, I think you should add this step to the troubleshooting list.

I doubt you damaged the wheel lock, but I guess it's possible. Shouldn't be any critical damage even if you did.
