UK towing a car with no engine

I'm picking up another rx8 tomorrow, the engine is out so will be towing it, but as it has no engine, it can't be a mechanically propelled vehicle, therefore would not need insurance. Does anyone know the UK "statutes" or know about this incase the unlikely event happens and I get pulled over by men in paramilitary uniforms, who may attempt to threaten me if the way I'm going about my business offends the queen.

I don't know what the UK statutes are, but prudence would dictate that you at least have liability insurance on it in case it decides to try to leave town on its own. Personal injury might also be worth considering in case any innocent bystander is injured in the attempted exit. As the old saying goes "Better safe than sorry".

Thought I'd post an update as it may be of use to others...

After contacting tempcover.com (97p a min phonecall!) The nice lady said that they cannot insure a vehicle that is being towed. They can however insure me to drive a towing vehicle that doesn't belong to me, which would include cover for anything being towed. They wont however insure any of my vehicles, to cover both my vehicle and the towed vehicle.. Crazyness....

I ask because there is a lot that can go wrong.

Were you planning on a rope, or one of those 2 tire little carrier things you rent (kind of a mini tow truck that lifts the front tires off the ground).
like in this links U-Haul: Tow Dolly Trailer Rental

if using a rope, Safety Tips for Towing a Car

I recently had to tow a small SUV back to the house (brother's car). We put both cell phones on speaker so we could talk. He still ran over the rope. I do not suggest using my brother.

Don't use my brother, either. Years ago he was the tower, I was the towee, using a tow chain. It was kind of an automotive version of "crack the whip."

Chains are hard... i have a tow rope, but it does not flex. I usually add something that will stretch a bit.

@EXE, make sure all the brakes work on the towed car (no power brakes, it will be work), do not use Ken's or my brother, and take it easy. rear car should initiate any stop and make absolutely sure not to run over the rope. See Top Gear a few episodes back for what happens.

Thanks for your help, funnily enough I used my friends brother! He had a recovery truck and got a good deal. This car is in absolute mint condition, now to rebuild the engine.

Good luck! Have you got the engine bits already?

I've almost finished rebuilding mine - I can almost see the end, but somethings not quite right
