Upgrading my sa22 rallycar to RX-8
Hi Guys im new to this forum And im from Denmark so im sorry about my English and spelling. but i have had my 1979 sa 22 rallycar for about 5 years.
Im getting tired of hard to find parts and tha fact that my 7 is almost completely changed nothing is stock.
That is why i have decided to buid a 2004 192 HP 5 speed to compete in the stock class that means no turbo and no remote resovoirs for the shocks..
im almost only doing tarmac rally and for the new car i want everything to be as easy as possible.
My 1 question is will the 192 hp engine be ****?. i have driven 231 hp cars and i dont feel my car to be that much slower.?? I would however like top get a little extra power.
I understand from reading this forum that 231 hp engine is as good as it gets almost from the factory but is that also the case with my 192 hp engine ore will there be some upgrades that will helo this engine be as good ore almost as good as the 231 hp
Will the 192 hp engine be better for Torque?
im planning on getting eighter yellow konis ore the D2 coilover wich is better??
im upgrading the front brake calipers.
Wich cloutch should i buy?
is there any issues with theese cars that a should adress before i start racing this car?
Any other mods i need to attend that will not include completely redesigning the car.'
Best regards Rasmus Andersen From Denmark

Get a 231 if you can. There is nothing you can do to get a 4-port engine up to 6-port performance. The 4-port may be more expensive to rebuild also, since parts less common.
Benefits of upgrading the calipers are very small, good brake pads will do you just fine even for racing. These cars have VERY good brakes.
Same for clutch, these engines aren't that powerful, the stock clutch will hold the power plenty.
Your focus should include ignition coils for reliability and maybe a Sohn oil injection adapter to separate injected oil from crankcase oil. For most other things you'll find the stock parts are plenty fine. Mazda didn't leave a lot on the table with this one
One thing to think about is cooling. You might be fine or you might need a better rad/water pump. Depends on the temps you hit, don't let this thing overheat!
Suspension-wise, in my experience on other cars D2 is junk, unless you absolutely need adjustability (which you might in rally). You're better with konis and a set of springs, but you're even better with a bilstein coilover set. Maybe with the money you save on leaving the calipers alone

AS for getting another car you have to understand that the car cost about 20000 USD here in Denmark
But I guess I will try change the car instead
