Versatune vs mazdaedit

Hello folks. New rx8 owner here. I purchased a modified 2005 rx8 with a cel for no cat. Instead of spending money on a cat and labor I rather buy a tuner to erase and not register the codes so I can get my car inspected here in new york. I'm on the fence between mazdaedit and versatuner. I read the threads here and see people seem to like mazdaedit but I'm reading good things about versatuner as well. Where I go to the mazdaedit forums on their website a lot of the posts are from 2012 and whatnot. It's a little concerning that there been inactive so long from there. Anyway, the main reason I want to get this is so that I can clear these codes and get my car Inspected in New York . Will clearing and deregistering codes via one of these tuners get .e past my obd2 emissions s test ? If you have experience between one or both of these products please feel free to share so I can make up my mind.

and yeah I did a search before this and the answers I got from searching didnt really answer that specific question.

thanx in advance.

MazdaEdit is probably used by more '8 owners right now because it's been around longer.

VersaTuner is being actively developed and they're building OTS tunes, as well.

I bought VersaTuner to mask a P0420 catalyst code as well as lower fan trigger temps and increase OMP rate. I've been happy with it. I haven't had an OBD-II emissions inspection since doing this (I'm due later this year) so I can't say whether it will allow me to pass.

For emissions testing, it depends on how many readiness monitors are disabled (which is effectively what is happening when you mask of a catalyst code) or "not ready" (which means the test is incomplete because you cleared codes or disconnected the battery). There are a bunch of readiness monitors that say whether the various emissions controls are working. I think you can only get away with having one "not ready" for MY2001+ vehicles.

I have a buddy with a missed and tuned mustang w no cats and the cels disabled and he said he has never had an issue with passing emissions. I guess I'm gonna a have to call someone that does emissions testing to see if this will work or just make it more difficult to complete emissions testing.

The code is only masked, the NYS test may still fail as it can see the fail code. My suggestion, get a cheap EML327 wifi adapter, download your favorite scanning OBD2 app into your phone. then reset the codes, drive until all are ready except O2, then get it inspected ASAP, NY allows for one code not ready as a pass. Right from their website;
"The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines allow up to two monitors to be in a "not ready" state for model year 1996 through 2000 vehicles and one monitor "not ready" for 2001 or newer model year vehicles."
