Water fluid light

I've owned my RX8 for 10 years and my water fluid light lit up for the very first time tonight. There is water in the reservoir so I'm not sure why it's popped up? Anyone experienced the same problem?

The sensor goes bad with age, it's not uncommon. Fixed by replacing the reservoir. Although be careful when replacing it, it's easy to break the radiator nipple leading to it while doing so.

As stated above this is a common thing. The coolant level sensor commonly fails and more commonly when the coolant is not not changed every couple years. I have had luck removing my tank and flushing the tank with BG cooling system cleaner and hot water in the tank with the nipples capped. The cleaner removed the sediment from the sensor and I have no issues currently. However if you want to ensure the issue is resolved, the expansion tank must be replaced as the sensor is integrated into the tank and is not able to be replaced separately.

Yes, as others have said, you need to just replace the tank with a new one, as Mazda modified the design a bit to prevent this once-common problem from recurring.

This is the replacement part you want:

Your Mazda dealer can install it for you. And yes, do remind them to be careful about not damaging the “radiator nipple”. They’ll know exactly what you’re talking about.

Good luck!
