Well took the plunge/risk

Well I just forked out £6k for a 40th anniversary rx8. I've had it for 2 weeks now and done about 250 miles which isn't much but there's a question I need to ask, is the steering and clutch supposed to be so heavy? I'm not criticising I've got used to it now but I was pretty suprised.

Also I'm in love with this car the only down side is the road tax which ends in a few weeks! £268 for 6 months is ridiculous considering a Audi a4's road tax is like £30. I have to laugh when people say how bad they are on fuel, I think it's not bad at all especially against the c4 I had!

The RX-8's steering weight has been described as "perfect". If you are coming from something that is really overboosted steering, then it's going to feel heavier, but at no point should it actually require muscle to turn the steering wheel. It should give lots of feedback without becoming tiring. If it IS too heavy, then it is probably a power steering problem. Pull the air box and air box tray out, and get down to the two connectors attached on the crossbar in the middle of the fans. That's the two powersteering connectors, and the source of 95% of power steering problems. Disconnect them, clean them thoroughly.

The clutch weight could be anything, but shouldn't be overly heavy. In 2004/2005, some RX-8s had heavier factory clutches than others, though they should all have become more standard on the lighter side by 2008. The prior owner could have installed an aftermarket clutch though.

thanks for the info! I think it may just be me not used to the steering. But the clutch is a different matter. It feels like its had a new cable fitted and tightened, and it might be worth mentioning i dont even have to have my clutch pedal half way to change gear.

I'm not complaining at all ive feel in love with it since i bought it! That tax is ridiculous though.one last thing, my dipstick is reading half way after an aggressive drive, should i and if so buy oil, if so how much does it take from half way from the dipstick to top it up? (1litre+)

It does sound like your clutch pedal isn't adjusted correctly, OR you have a race clutch (or both). There is a spec for adjustment that you can follow. Just takes a 10mm and 12mm wrench

Typical oil usage is 1 quart (about a litre) every 1,200-2,000 miles. You can get as low as about 1 litre every 800 miles if you turn up the oil injection, or even 1 litre every 300 miles if you spend a lot of time on the racetrack.

It takes about 1 litre to fill the oil from the low mark to the high mark on the dipstick. The level on the dipstick can change between hot and cold, so only compare oil levels at the same engine temp. If you really did burn half a litre in one short drive, you were probably beltching oil smoke out the back. I'm guessing that wasn't true.

I didn't say i used half of the full gauge of the dipstick, i said i checked it after an aggressive drive which meant the oil was warm and read half on the dipstick.
