Why does an Oil Metering Pump cost $1600?
My 04 has a bad oil pump which leaks, has anyone else had this problem and if so did you pay Mazda's extortion fee or find a used one?
But $1600???
WTF is this some cruel joke why is it so expensive?

Complicated, unique to a niche car, small market, not common failure, dealer markup.
Pick 5 or more of the above.
Used ones can be found for far far less, from partouts in the classifieds section or in junkyards. It's not a commonly failing part, so there is a good chance any wrecked 8 will still have it to pull.
If you end up buying a new one, call Mazmart, a forum vendor here. I'm positive that they can beat the dealer's price.

I had KDR install some SS lines for my OMP some time back. In doing so the mechanic (not Dave) cross threaded one of the banjo joints and it eventually started to leak. Of course the shop told me it was faulty lines so I talked to the guy that I special ordered them from me and he said in all his years with rotaries he'd never once had a problem with them but since they have a lifetime warranty he would have no problem exchanging them.
Long story, not so long, I went back to the stock lines (new ones, those ******* are just as expensive as the SS ones) and it was at that point I figured out that the shop had stripped one of the housings.
Got a "new to me" replacement OMP out of that deal, but with the cost of the lines alone it was far from cheap.
