The proper course of action has already been suggested to you. Pull the cat and inspect it. Dump the rattling bits out, while you have it out. Do the same with the catback, if you think there is is something in it.

I replaced my cat with a bhr catless midpipe and a borla catback which sounds nice at cruising speeds and can be a little obnoxious while close to redline but still has a deeper sound than most pairs which still sounds nice but loud. I started and revved my 8 when I removed my cat just to see what it sounded like and if i had to drive my 8 like that, I would have sold both 8s long ago. A catless straight pipe 8 is more annoying than any cycle or even a big group of cycles that I have ever heard.
These guys are pointing you in the correct direction with your car if you truly want to take care of it. If not you might as well save up for more than one engine replacements.
