The only part of the drive train that would be retained is the IRS differential. No one in their night mind would keep the Mazda 6MT in the car and the CF drive shaft could be sold to recover some conversion costs.

At idle, will it sound like someone is gargling with water in the back of their throat?

to the topic creator, screw the LS1 and either drop a 20b in there or get turbo'd.

hey I've heard of a 350Z being fitted with a 20b before, engine swaps are the purist form of "hot rodding". Amazing how many people forget about that.. Oh and for a swap like this there would definatly be alot of modification so things like balancing and handling would definatly be thought of and handled accordingly. A swap like this isnt a "backwoods garage" job by a long shot.

Well if we can fit the old RX-7 Engine in our car I dont see why we cant fit the LS1 in our car.

As a project for someone with the skill and resources to do it properly (i.e. upgrade more than the motor), I can see the attraction but personally I'd rather maximise the Renesis' potential and then move on to something else (e.g. 911, etc) if I was still after more power.

Sure - it's a question of whether you want to modify something to get more of it or just buy it off the shelf. If it's the former, do you want to completely change the character of the car or simply maximise it?

where does that extra 400 lbs come from? Are you going to tell me the Ls1 is 400 lbs heavier than the Renesis? ugh..please (if you really believe that, then you need to check out the recent issue of sport compact car where they pit a v8 FD with a real FD, or go check out http://www.torquecentral.com/forumdisplay.php?f=11 and ask some people questions, you will quickly find that the weight difference is about 20-50 lbs. for a 13Brew, so it's probably not far off the Renesis either)

as far as an Ls2 or Ls7 instead of an LS1, if you can find either one of those for anything even close to the price of an LS1 (which you won't, but anything's possible) than go for it. I'll say it again, as much as i hate too, you won't find a cheaper, more reliable, more easily obtainable option than the LS1 for a swap. As sick as it is to do the 20b and all, you can get more power for cheaper, more reliability, with better mileage with an LS1. I really really hate to post it, but it's true. I myself am not ready to give up on our Renesis though, It took people a few years to figure out the 13b when it first came out, give this car more time and people will really start to see the potential of it.

You make a great point. I would like to mod the car. It makes it more fun. Oh the other hand I just want to maximise it. As in power.
I would also look into a Supra swap
If the RX-7 could do it why cant we?

Well the Rx-7 has a bunch of aftermarket support for the swap. I'm looking into doing a 2nd gen Ls1 swap.

Here...

hinsonsupercars.com

grannysspeedshop.com

You need new subframe mounts to put a V8 in, it's far from drop in. You need to change the transmission mounting too.

I'm sure someone will come out with these things for the 8 in due time. Especially with the recall.

because a LS2 would cost too much, and you can get the same if not better performance from a much cheaper v8 (ls1).

Because you can do more with a rx7 than an rx8 obviously
