Cobalt SS engine Swap

Ok this is gonna get my alot of hate on here but i would like to get the questions awnsered. Would it be possible to Fit a Chevrelet Cobalt SS Manual FWD engine in the RX8.

concerns:

- Engine size
- the fact that its a FWD engine

all this would would be done by a mechanic not me, just wanna get my facts right before i propose it to him.

anythig is possible with obscene amounts of money, time and very skilled people. are you thinking of making a fwd car out of an 8? i dont think it would work. it going rwd im not sure if you would have the clearance to spin the enging 90 deg. i havent worked on an ss in a while. why would you chose that engine? its just an economy engine with a s/c.

i think it would be cheaper to swap 13b in an 8 than what your thinking about

There's a current thread in the new member forum by a guy who owns an RX-8 and a Cobalt. He's planning an LS1 swap for the 8. Maybe you can collaborate with him on the possibilities of the Cobalt.

My vote would also be the Isuzu V-6 from the Rodeo. They are readily available and apparently all the rage in Australia. Plus the dyno numbers are just bonkers.

Moved to the correct subforum.

Anything is possible with enough money. You can swap in a steam engine if you want to.

The only engine that fits without severe modification is a 13b from the RX-7s, and if you are paying someone to do it, expect to fork over $15,000ish for that.

ANY other engine will require redesigning and rebuilding the front of the car from scratch. Expect the same $30,000+ price tag for literally engine engine you swap in. The reason for this is primarily that the the Renesis engine in the RX-8 is mounted in a location that NO piston engine can be mounted in without removing the firewall or displacing the entire front subframe and steering components. So this means custom everything...and "everything" includes things that you aren't even thinking of, and all the way back to at least the rear differential. Once you have it physically installed, then you have the other half of the coil, the electronics. The RX-8's ECU controls literally everything about the car ... except the engine you install. Pull out that ECU and the rest of the car is dead in the water. Door locks, windows, ABS, TCS, etc... . Leave the ECU in and you have a christmas tree on the dash cluster (which you have to keep if you keep the ECU). So you have to have integration modules created to figure out how to get everything working together. And no, there aren't any out there yet. There might be a module for integrating with a Chevy LS ECU, but lots of promises not being delivered on is the name of the game in swap-land.

Basically...if you want a Cobalt engine, drive your other car. If you want a good car, drive the RX-8. If you aren't happy with either, go get something else, like an Evo. You can buy an Evo for less than the cost of swapping.

But to keep the spirit of the rotary, it should be an aeolipile rather than a Newcomen or Watt type engine.

to make the car a fwd car it would be excessive modifications including:
• Custom subframe (the factor subframe blocks the axle line)
• either finding a hub that will accept the axel or building a a custom hub assembly.
• then the abs sensors have to be made to work as they are in the hub bearing. ( havnt opened one up to see how it works.

Then steering would have to be dealt with.

In my personal opinion I don't think it would be worth the trouble.

1. A completely custom subframe to only build one will be outrageous because of its precision and mockup.

Then dealing with the axels I'm not sore of its difficulties.

However the ls1 swap if it's just a fun car you could go with a 4.8 auto from a truck for decently cheap from like lkq or eBay with a 6 month warranty.

I daily drive 400+miles a week so I needed the t56 and I get 19mpg driving it like I stole it.

Although I have yet to get a can bus module built witch is being worked on. The lights that remain on are

• traction control light and function
• check engine light
• battery light

And there have been guys that have made the swap available without the use of a welder.

And I bought and built my car from used parts off of craigslist and whatnot for a total of 8k and 3k for the car.

In the end it's your car your money your decision.

So collect all you can and see what you come up with.

Will love to see the build whatever you may chose.

You say Cobalt, I say Solstice/Sky. Relatively same engine, as GM engines go..

And they do have a Turbo 2.0 Ecotec that puts out 250 hp to the wheels and tons of Aftermarket support.... ZZPerformance | 3800 Performance Parts | Largest Aftermarket Supplier!

But...

It would be insane to even consider because of how much it would cost to do.
